So I was playing Jedi Outcast, when the game freezes and the sound starts looping. I press a few buttons, esc, crtl-alt-del, but it doesn't respond. A few seconds later, the sound changes up a bit, but is still looping. Then my screen goes black. My monitor's LED turns to orange indicating power saving mode. I press the reset button and the computer starts up.
I notice that the monitor's screen size settings are lower than i had them before. The screen's now about an inch from each side of the monitor. I set it back with the buttons on my monitor.
Everything seems fine, except I'm noticing more scan lines on the screen. And there's this flickering on windows. One time the screen flashed black for like a second before it came back. I have a 350w Antec power supply that came with the case. A Chaintech vnf3-250 motherboard. A PowerColor Radeon 9800 pro. An old Vision Grafic 15" color monitor.
There was a thunderstorm last night and the power went out. However, I have a UPS powersurge protector with a battery and was able to shut down my system regularly. So I doubt that was the cause.
edit: Hmm, it seems teh flickering is only happening on 2d graphics. I loaded up the Dawn of War demo, which has a 3d/2d menu. The 3d area was fine, but when I put my mouse over teh 2d menu choices, they flickered like my windows did.
