me and my friend both have this virus on our system and we can't get them out because the virus won't allow the installation of Mcaffe or norton. Supposedly this virus is not on the hard drive because i reformated that, fdisked it and formated the m-fer again.

what can i do???

[edit] oh yeah i have no clue what negative effects this virus has except not let me install programs?

What makes you think you have a virus?
What OS were you running, and what are you running now?

As was stated, do you have more info, why do you think it's a virus, if it is do you have the name?

Try formatting from the utility disk thats provided from your hard drive manufacturer. Just make sure your floppy is locked, and powerdown after its done. There are some pretty nasty viruses that write themselves into the mbr and move the mbr for the hard disk. If you have someone that can make an emergency rescue CD with all the latest virus updates, that would be ideal.

oh sorry guys. Got a p3 550 running win98 se and its the same OS as before and off of same cd. I don't think the problem is there.

The reason why i say i have a virus is because i both me and my friend are both running win 98 se. with different internals, his is freshly formated to attempt to clean the virus. I know it has to be a virus because its not just something with the anti virus its also his sat. modem so he's got no internet.

We already tried the emergency boot disk and that didn't do anything.

I had a mbr virus on an older computer and i forgot how to get rid of that you guys want to remind me? Perhaps that might work?

You really haven't articulated the problem yet or shown any evidence of a viral infection. You can boot from the NAV rescue/restore disk and all that to scan your MBR to be sure. If you have internet you can try the online security check at Symantec

Try booting to the Norton AV CD and allow it to scan your system.
If the virus is in the definition file on the CD, it will find it.

Was the Windows 98 boot diskette "write protected"? Get a copy of a 98SE boot diskette from a known clean computer, use fdisk, then format c, then install Windows again.

Go to Antivirus.COM and use their online virus scanner HouseCall. I believe it's in their free tools section. If you've *really* got a virus, it'll find it.

Otherwise, you still need to post more clues about why you think you have a virus -- there's still nothing listed for us to help. What's acting goofy? What's missing? What's there that shouldn't be? These are clues we need to help you... If you want help, help us help you!

First of all I would like to thank you all for coming back and reposting trying to help me out. I really appreciate it and I am trying to answer these questions the best i can without driving all of us crazy.

First thing I tried. I even used the 98se bootable cdrom so i know that the hd is clean. so that isn't the case.

I got on the phone with tech support and they said its either in the Mbr or cmos but couldn't do much about it. Does Fdisk remove this or do i have to do something else to do a format or fdisk of the mbr. And if you guys no how to reset set it how do i reset the cmos.

I don't know much about viruses so the fact that i am not explaining myself well isn't too surprising. Is there a FAQ or what you need to know about viruses. I can't use emergency disks or anything like that because computer decides to do a "forever boot" where I can go to work come back and nothing is loaded except for a black screen with blinking _ in the courner.

I am at school now but i'll be on later with the exact error message that i get from installing anything. I don't know if that will help but i will try.
