I don't see how anyone could overdraft. The very first thought that comes into my mind when I write a check is how much money I have in that account. Those two are so tightly coupled in my mind that it's automatic for me now.

Rule No. 1:
Always know how much money you have.

My wife (who, BTW, makes about 10% more than me) handles our finances. It's not that I don't think I could do them (open mail, pay bills, remember the rent on the 30th - simple!), but she's a few years older than I am, and has had more experience at it. We discuss major purchases before we buy them, and try to plan what we spend to spread it out over the year. Above all, we try to be frugal with our big purchases, and try to get stuff we'll both enjoy. I don't want to give off the impression that we're stingy and cheap, but we try to put away some money every month for a house, retirement, and general savings. So far, we've always succeeded in having that balance between having a nice life and saving for the future.

I often feel like that when stuff like the OP describes happens, there's bigger problems than some overdrafts. If your wife cut thirty checks, and you've got no clue what any of them were for, maybe that's hinting to some sort of greater communications issue? One of the posters suggested marriage counselling, and that could be a good idea if you're finding this issue snowballing. Ignore the morons chanting for a divorce - it's obvious that things are nowhere near that stage.

Maybe it's a cultural thing... But the last time i've used a check was to pay my dorm rent last may...
Every commerce i go to have some way to use debit or credit cards.
I have not seen a store accept checks since that time my mom went to Costco (right before she let her card expire voluntarily ten years ago, quantities are just too big for the household). Personal checks are an endangered species, in my part of the world at least. I also have a "margin" that serves as a buffer if i spend too much money. (went 95¢ over when i bought a winter coat 2 weeks ago, it prevents a lot of bad situations...)

Having you account online is the best thing the internet has, use it often, use it wisely.
