i have no idea about these and always here about different versions. what is the current version? i am thinking the 30GB model, do the 80GB models offer anything else besides a larger hdd? are the ipods pretty tough or rather fragile? anything i need to look for or is there any weird issues with them?

looks like i will be buying a large hdd and converting our 300+ cd collection to 192Kb/s lame mp3.....at least i have 3 machines to help me out

thanks in advance

1. is she likes to run get her a nano.

2. if she won't be jogging, then she'll want a 30GB ipod video since she'll probably get hooked on the video quickly

i think the regular size one would be good for her. can you jog with that one at all? what about walk/ride a bike? i don't think she will be jogging as she has a hip injury, but walking/riding a bike yes.

wll my bro has a 20gig ipod, its fairly old, not the color screen ones and its been bashed about for sure, but it still works fine. if you look after things then there should be no reason it will die.

see what she wants, my gf was going for a the 30gig one (which also does video btw) but then decided the "cute" nano was her bag instead.

unless you have massive amounts of music i think the 30gig ipod is a good choice. i dont have lots of music, hence why i bought a 6gb sony NW-A1000, but even with my meager collection...im rather short on space.

i dunno exactly what the current generation is, all i know is they are called video ipods as the new ones can now play mpeg4 video files as well as music, and they all have nifty color screens

i am thinking the 30GB should suffice, not sure what the cd collection is going to turn into size wise, but she doesn't need all of it with her at all times, i just don't see the need for a 80GB since i don't really think she will be using the video as she doesn't even watch tv on our 40"hd lcd.....

as otispunkmeyer said, if you take care of it you can do a lot with it, including jogging and the like. That said, the nano has no moving parts so with a good case, the thing is damn near indestructible.

That said, the video offers a nice big screen, video, etc, so if she's walking, either will do.

If she won't be usign the video I recommend that nano. It has a color screen and can even display photos, but is much smaller and she can even get the one that works with a special nike shoe that can track her walks etc.

when you say "take care of it" i am assuming just normal and not needing to be that gentle? when we got a laptop that she uses i picked up a t series ibm because i knew they were built pretty tuff, and it has faired well. sometimes she just drops stuff, that is the fear since there is a hdd in there. are they are cases that help with that? maybe give a little cushion? thanks guys, i really appreciate this

it serves to not only undervalue the 30GB but overvalue the nano as well.

I say go to the store and try them out

I have the nano and love it btw.

*waits for ipod haters to come in*

but before that happens.... Get the 30GB video. You won't regret it. While the nanos are tremendously small, the ipod videos are not too hefty and will likely be plenty small enough for stuff like biking, especially if you carry a little pouch or something.

edit: assumed from OP that large HDD space was needed. if not, then I would also say spring for the nano. Its amazingly compact. but if HDD space is a concern, then the video will do fine-- as its size isnt a problem anyway, imo.

I carry my 30gig when I'm running all the time. After a while you wont notice it at all plus it's a easy way to change songs if you're like me and change songs a lot.

Hey, I'm thinking about getting an iPod too -- quick question: Can it play OGG and WMA?

no.

as far as audio ipods play mp3s, aac, and m4a files.

Using the dBpoweramp (google it) converter you can convert all your files to something that ipods play.
