Wifi Issues with Netgear Router!

Recently moved into a new apartment. Got the standard high speed cable from time warner. Used original netgear mr814 v2 from home.

Have one computer through LAN. Have three computers through wifi. All of a sudden now I constantly get cut offline, then it will refresh and show there are several connections to connect to. I have it set so it connects to mine automatically (but it's never done this).

1) Upgraded the firmware before I moved in, worked fine at home wifi and LAN.
2) The other two wifi computers are getting cut off AIM periodically ever 10 minutes or so.
3) I tried using different PCMCIA cards for my laptop, similar results. Netgear now, tried Dell truemobile 1150.

Any ideas why?

Oh yes: i have wep 128 bit enabled. broadcasting ssid. do not have access controls turned on. tried resetting the router to default values, similar problems.

Are there any changed enviroment variables? Like additional networks, microwaves, etc? This may be causing a lot of interference with your router.

I hope you didn't flash the firmware with wireless. I would download the firmware again (making sure it's for v2) and reflash it using a physically connected computer.

Try this:
Once you're connected to the right access point, stop the Wireless Zero Config service. If I understand it correctly, that will keep it from looking for new networks.

There are no new interferences to my knowledge. But heck, if I'm finding more wireless spots then those are interferences!

I couldn't find the WIRELESS ZERO CONFIG deal.

And I flashed the firmware quite sometime ago, before I moved into the new placed on LAN. I suppose I can always try it again.

Any other suggestions? Any known complications between router and different branded wireless cards?

1. Click the Start Button and then hit Run.
2. Type in services.msc
3. Scroll to the bottom of the list to Wireless Zero Configuration. Rightclick it and hit stop.

See if that makes a difference. But be warned, don't mess with any other services.

Hi there. That helped a little, I don't get cut off as frequently. I figured maybe it was just time to reformat. So I did that today, and it's still not resolved. Something is screwy, maybe just time to get a new router?

I just read over some stuff on ezlan.

Question: the only benefits of having a "g" versus "b" would be file transfers between WLAN from computer to computer? What's the purpose of this then? What if we're gaming or browsing the net? Doesn't the 54 versus 11 make a difference? What about when DLing?

Confused...

Very strange... I have been using Netgear router/switches for 5 years now. I never once had any problems with them short of some configuration problems on the older models. Right now I am using the same wireless router as you and I never heard of your problem... my only guess is there is a lot of interference where you are at.

Gaming and surfing aren't helped by 802.11g vs. 802.11b. The latency is the same, and the bandwidth is high enough on both that it'll outpace your internet connection.

As for having too many connections available, if you hit the "Properties" button for each one you should get a window with three tabs, the last of which is "Connections." In that tab, uncheck the box that says you want to connect to it automatically when in range, except on the one for your router. Keep the one for your router checked.
Couple that with stopping the Zero Config service, and you should have a consistent, solid connection.

Elfnumber1,
Make sure you are not broadcasting your SSID and that you are using the Access Filtering on the 814. Someone could be using your connection.

I recently had a topic concerning the problem of my wireless setup. I was cut off many times on my laptop (connected wirelessly) and then it would say "several connections available for connection."

I have already tried reflashing for the most up-to-date firmware. We had several computers running wirelessly. Considering that nothing I did helped, I decided to buy cat5 cables and just route it wired through the router. I have also recently reformatted and freshly installed windows.

The laptop still has problems, where I'd get cut off (only AIM). Because I can still browse without repairing the connection. The computer does not go into standby or hibernate.

Any suggestions?
