WiFi vs Wired Speeds

Nope, it's a perfect (albeit a bit vague) example. Some people think those cars are fun and convenient but would never use them to haul construction equipment.

Wireless is convenient and "fun", but should never be relied on when you need a stable and fast connection.

If you need stable,reputable connection to stay always satisfied with quality of connection and speed,then wired is a way to go.Remember,that wifi will never give you tomorrow warranty.

I have both wired and wireless connections in my house.

5Ghz N upstairs / Mixed mode N/G/B downstairs

Anything that I care about speed and stable performance is wired.

Wireless is great for laptops and other smaller devices.

I transfer alot of content from my download box to my HTPC and that is a 1Gbps connection that does 80/90mb sec anything less is unacceptable for that use.

But to each his own.

For some of my boxes and what i'm doing it demands a better connection than wireless can provide.

I am curious what high bandwidth needs those at home here have. I can pay for movies, game, do all my email, etc on wireless. The only thing I have plugged a cable in for at times is a PC to PC download of 1GB or more. Now I just clone a drive.

I don't have many high bandwidth needs -- we only use a WRT54-GL and it is sufficient for any HD video. There are times I want to shuffle something large (usually video, maybe a disc image for some reason, very large install file, etc) over the network and I prefer that to be wired for sure (Gb switches for internal network).

In general if I *can* wire something up, I will, thus leaving the wireless bandwidth free for the ever increasing number of wireless devices (granted, it is rare for more than one of them to be hitting wireless hard at any given time as well). Of course, running wire is/was my day job, so that makes it a little easier for me.

Turn off mixed mode if you can. With your setup, if one Wireless B device is within range of your network, ALL your 2.4GHz traffic will fall down to those speeds (11Mbps theoretical)

Wired is always better, it also guarantees privacy since there is absolutely no way someone can see traffic without physical access. Wireless is great for convenience and for devices like phones and other mobile devices, but I would not do anything but Ethernet for PC/servers/other permanent installs. 10g is out of reach price wise but it's nice to know that when it becomes affordable, it will be as simple as switching out end devices (switch/nics). Though honestly I am quite happy with 1gb I don't see myself upgrading to 10 for clients. Maybe storage/servers.

Pretty much this.

Even nightly backups of the computers in the house are easy enough to do. (There's just never that much new data.)
