The gerbiling thing isn't a myth, one of my good buddies was present in an ER in Oklahoma City when a gerbil was extracted from a wealthy local man's rectum:Q

I've witnessed the removal of a vibrator that'd been in place for days:disgust: (carried the vibrator to pathology lab myself).

The medical records usually reflect a "foreign body removal"

I'm just saying that the Richard Gere gerbilling thing is a myth.

The gerbil in question was wrapped up in tape, and the patient said he enjoyed it when the animal went into it's death throes/seizures.

Patient confidentiality & the fear of a law suit is what's keeping the medical records out of the reporters hands.

When was the last time you saw a patient's chart posted on the net? Or anywhere?

I'm not saying the whole gerbil thing is/is not true. I'm just saying that the with regards to Gere it doesn't seem to be.

If you say you experienced a gerbil incident then I believe it. Like I said, i've experienced many interesting things myself.

But just to carry on the topic ...

Wouldn't be hard to do. However, that's where the legality comes in with a vengeance. Sites would be shut down pretty darn quick. Tho', if I wanted to I could just bring up a trolley, load up a ton of charts and head over to the photocopy room and copy away.

However, the whole thing is that if a reporter were to go around snooping for this kind of info it probably wouldn't be hard to find corroborating evidence and/or chart materials to back it up. The whole idea is that the origins of this myth could not be substantiated with any kind of real accuracy. Now, over the years copycat incidents have surely been discovered in the many ERs in America and I have no doubts about that.

The original story - hard to substantiate.
The after effects - very real.
Richard Gere - just a (bad) rumor.

What likely happened is that for several years it was purely a myth someone had created, the rumor indeed took hold and made its rounds. Once that happened, it was only a matter of time before some idiot's curiosity got the best of them.
