Wiley Coyotes – How to get rid of?

I live on 5 acres on the outskirts of a major city and there is a creek/gully where 4 properties come together. In the last 3 or 4 months, a pack of coyotes have made this area their home. At first, they hunted the smaller animals, raccoons, squirrels, possums, skunks, and other varmints. Now that this food supply has dried up, the coyotes have been feasting on cats and small dogs. One neighbor let his 35 pound poodle out for 5 minutes and it never came back. Similar stories for many neighbors. A complaint to the city only told us that these are natural animals and they cannot do anything. Shooting a firearm off in this area (city limit) will get you arrested. Leaving out poison, is feared will kill other animals. It appears we are left with just BB guns and bow and arrows.

Perhaps I should have paid more attention as a youth when watching Roadrunner cartoons. Yes, I realize that someone is likely to suggest an ACME slingshot.

Trap them out? Get a snare, or post on some Kansas hunting forum that you want coyotes taken care of and I'm sure some fur trader will take you up on your offer.

Coyotes are smart enough to know how to hide and prefer to avoid humans. If you know where they live, then go to that spot and let them know that you know they are there. Harass them and they will move. But be careful since they could attack.

Tell your neighbours not to feed them. i.e: don't leave your small pets outside.
Or move back to the city, land of concrete.

I doubt very much that the outside wild animals have 'dried up'.

I guess the question would be, would any of your neighbors call the cops if you shoot the coyotes? If the coyotes are really that bad, just let your neighbors know what night you plan on fixing the problem, and I would bet that none heard a thing if the cops show up. Then there is always the bow and arrow as has been mentioned.

Maybe if you happened to be carrying a pistol on your property and the coyotes tried to attack...I swear they tried to officer...

100% this, use a smaller round and let neibours know and just shoot them, problem solved.

Unless you think you can trap and transport them 200+ miles away i dont see how else you are going to solve this issue.

Its somewhat unusual for coyotes to form long lasting packs, though not unheard of. From what I think I know, they usually do this when food is scarce. I would use caution, if you decide to approach their home. They are typically scared of humans so loud noises like a lawn mower or chainsaw may drive them off. Since they are packing anyway, you may just wait for them to move on when food runs out. You do run the risk of rabid coyotes, however. They are nice to have around at a distance because they take care of smaller nuisance creatures, just be careful with any pets. They will move on eventually since they are nomadic by nature. I would wait it out. My $.02.

Naw, that's not a permanent solution. Coyote always came back for more.

This problem usually starts because someone has been feeding stray dogs and cats and starts feeding stray coyotes. Then when they stop, the pack starts hunting other 'prey' in the area.

Subsonic 22 or 223 should be enough to take care of the problem without anyone being any wiser. But they will move on once there is no food.

The key is two, or more. Don't need to be pits. Any larger breed will be a threat as long as they are paired up. I had a couple of shepherd-dobie mutts that were hell on wheels when it came to intruders.

Crossbow will pack a better wallop than a standard bow.

May be easier to sight also.

Best thing is to ensure that no one is encouraging the animals and also make it inconvenient for them by disturbing their habitat.

When I've had to deal with them I did so with a blind, some smelly bait, a friend manning a spotlight, and .22 Mag with a 3x scope. I've heard others say they just unload several loads of 12gauge mag buckshot, but there's too much room for wounding and not killing there for me.
I have Anatolian Shephards on duty these days, they run off or tear up anything stupid enough to ignore their warnings, haven't had to shoot anything in quite awhile.

I guess in your case trapping makes sense, I wouldn't try poison. A good start would be to get some buddies over and enjoy a lot of beer. Then all of you venture down there and piss everywhere. Do this a few times, and watch the coyotes take off. They live by their noses, strong human smells should eventually drive them out. In lean times you just have to kill them though, hunger makes them bold and tolerant.

If food is running out, be careful with small children. Coyotes have been known to stalk and attack children playing.

Since you can't discharge a firearm, you're not really going to be able to hunt them. You'd be wasting your money on a crossbow or regular bow - you need a rifle, because you're not likely to get close enough to be within range for an arrow. Traps could work if you get an experienced coyote trapper to set them for you. If you just go out and get the traps yourself, you'll probably fail. Just the tiniest bit of human scent on the trap - while setting it - is enough that they'll go around it.

Alternative - have your neighbors replace their dogs - with BIG dogs. Some breeds of dogs have no problem ripping coyotes to shreds (and have been bred to do that.) Livestock guard dogs generally don't have much of a problem with coyotes. Though, this is probably an inconvenient method of eliminating the coyotes, unless you want very large pet dogs.
