i have seen some tasks in photoshop run 5x to 10x faster when running on an SSD compared to when running on a HDD.

The good brands of SSDs are Intel, Samsung, Crucial, (and maybe Sandisk) .. while if possible avoiding any TLC based drives, even if from those good brands.

I would be reluctant to buy from Kingston. They have been caught before doing dishonest practices like sending higher end SSD's to reviewers and then when they manufacture them they use slower memory but still use the same model number. Plus I have a Kingston SSD on my wifes pc and find it noticeably slower than my samsung and even my older crucial SSD.

For me, sandisk, samsung, intel, crucial are the best options.

Check out the user reviews from places like Newegg and Amazon to see the experiences of regular users fall in line with the reviewers' from review sites.

But yeah, unless you are benchmarking and copying many files back and forth between drives most of the differences in speed between sata SSDs aren't very noticeable other than that SSDs are much noticeably faster than HHDs

Also besides the speed of launching programs or booting from an SSD the OS just feels snappier quicker to respond to user inputs when it's installed on an SSD.

Given the the prices that can be had for SSDs today I agree with people urging you to get one.

Ever notice how laptops, even with speedy processors and ample RAM, tend to load Windows & software slower than molasses? It's because damn near all of them come with 5400 RPM (and some still 4800) drives. Yeah, it's a problem if you are looking for a smooth running system.

Since I installed my first Adata 120 GB 5 years ago for the OS, I'll never use a spinner again except for a secondary HDD. That's my setup now. OS is on the SSD and most of all the other stuff including downloads gets sent to the second HDD platter.

I even stuck a SSD in the laptop. Night and day difference.

I have learned however that power should be turned on every few months or so otherwise a SSD can lose data. I've had my desktop off for about 2 months and was still good.

Laptops are being shipped with the OS installed on SSDs, some of which wait even one year before their first owner turns them on. With only months of data retention available, those systems would be DOA for many customers.

Even at the end of their service life, when the unit has reached it's manufacturer TBW rating, a SSD must still be able to ensure data retention for at least 1 year at 30C. For a drive that is well under it's max TBW rating, data retention is significantly longer. (many years)

It's true though that keeping a SSD turned off in a hot environment (over 30C) can result in drastically reduced data retention, and can lead to data loss. Moral of the story: if kept off for long periods of time, store your SSD in a cold environment (bellow 30C).
