Will a band being "religious" but not in your face about it turn you off to them?

I like Demon Hunter, and Skillet has some pretty sweet stuff. Both bands have their crap as well.

I'm much more offended by some of the crap in today's rap music than I ever would be with religious music. At least religious music is with good intent.

There are some good bands that bill themselves as Christian, someone mentioned Thousand Foot Krutch and they're a good example. What I loathe is Christian Soft Rock, that is the stuff you'll hear >95% of the time you find a Christian radio station in the bible belt. The worst is KLove, if you've never heard of them count your blessings.

highly debatable.

also, never go to a concert that has christian hardcore bands. me and a buddy went to a show once to see a band that was apparently christian (but not christian music). all the openers turned out to be christian bands, most of them of the really, really shitty hardcore variety.

it was the worst thing i have ever been a witness to.

Christian music sucks balls.

I would say that Collective Soul has slight religious overtones (some occasional subtle references to God), but they're a solid enough band that I can overlook that. Plus they've never claimed to be a Christian band.

I'm an agnostic. No.

Jars of Clay - Much Afraid is a great CD. It's good music even if they are a bunch of god-lovin' christ-worshipers.

Ever hear a good version of "Amazing Grace"? That's as religious as it gets but as music it's a hundred times as good as anything in the top 40.

Good music is good music. Now that doesn't include much "Christian Rock" but it doesn't include much regular rock either. As Sturgeon's Law states, "90% of everything is crap."

My biggest complaint with christian rock aside from the preachyness is it pigeon holes you as an artist. Plus its' too easy to get a platinum album

The ironic thing about Jars of Clay is that they are probably some of the best musicians in the Christian music industry and yet the industry wants little to do with them.

Anyway, I am a Christian and I'm more than happy to admit that 99% of the music you hear on Christian radio is pretty bad music. There is plenty of the stereotypical Faith Plus One type Christian music, but there actually is good music out there. Sufjan Stevens is another Christian artist who is really quite creative.

When I was Young and a Christian there were some Bands that I loved and even respect to this day:

1) Resurrection/Rez Band--Social Activists from Chicago whose Profits went to Soup Kitchens and other such endeavors. They did a lot of Covers of Secular music, but most of what they did was Original. They had a Blues/Rock/Metal style, looked like Bikers, and were very in your face with Social Issues like ApartheidAfrikaans, Hypocrisy, and similar themes. Very good Band in their own right and although I don't really listen to them anymore, I still enjoy their style. Love Comes Down Someone Sleeps

2) The Daniel Amos Band/DA--Country/Punk/Rock/80's Techno. Great band with a lot of talent. I still occasionally link one of their songs Rocket Packs when it seems appropriate to the subject of the thread(usually complaining that something doesn't exist yet). The Album that song comes from, Vox Humana, is simply musically awesome start to finish.

3) Larry Norman--Blues/60's Rock. Long haired Hippy and one of the very first Christian Rockers. Controversial because of his Musical style, but also because he smoked Pot. Much of his stuff is soo Religious I have a hard time listening to it, but here's something not too bad. Watch What you're Doing

I'm ok with Religious Bands these days, but often I roll my eyes if I hear something too religious in a song.

I dont give a damn, as long as its not too corny "Oh how I love thee" and crap like that, they can sing about whatever they feel like as long as the MUSIC is good, I dont pay much attention to lyrics, if that was the case I would go read poetry instead

one of my favorite groups is sixpence none the richer. they have many overt and non-overt christian songs. best of all though is their 4th and last studio album was called "divine discontent" and the jesus stuff was toned way down and then they broke up. looks like trouble in jesus-ville!

...but then they reformed. you can't keep jesus down for long!

Some of the best metal/hardcore music from the last 15 years has come from "christian" bands

Flyleaf is a fantastic band and they have a lot of energy at their concerts. I saw them on Family Values tour, on stage somewhere between Atreyu and Korn. I don't really care the faith of the band as long as the music is good. I do not like preachy songs or "Christian rock." Flyleaf is not Christian rock...just some musicians who happen to be Christian. I am willing to bet that many of the bands that we listen to daily have a Christian in their band since it is the predominant religion in the USA.

Given that oh about 87.345% of all music ever made is religious (maybe a bit more) I have to say, no, it doesn't bother me. Only music that sucks bothers me. Christian rock got a well earned reputation for sucking, not because it was religious, but because it sucked so hard. A good rock band that performs Christian music because that is what their faith calls them to do with their talents is fine by me.

This. I listen to about 50/50 and I have to listen to CDs when I listen to Christian music because most of the stuff sucks really horribly. I like more stuff from the 90's than today.

Excellent album. I'm a big fan of Jars of Clay.

lol yeah I recall checking them out way back in the day when they came out with "kiss me" and finding out they were a Christian band.
