I just did some Googling and couldn't find a detailed description of that slot.
But most of the motherboards that I have seen with PCIe m.2 slots will also accept SATA SSDs as well. But SATA m.2 slots won't take PCIe SSDs.
I don't know, but could someone clarify whether the physical implementation of m.2 can use SATA vs PCIe, would that depend on software/firmware, because they are physically the same m.2 interface, just different protocols?
Yes m.2 is a form factor. You can have both m.2 PCIe and m.2 SATA. Support is up to the computer. There are no reviews yet of that nice XPS 15, but perhaps off of Dell's support site you can try to sleuth manuals or specifications.
