I read that a CPU can get shorted out by energy surge, etc. Also read not to put a shorted cpu into a motherboard. I had an AMD 4850e CPU on an Asus vm-2A board. The PSU went crazy spitting out sparks and then dying. After that the System wouldn't boot. I didn't know what components died so i started by buying a new MBoard. Asrock 128gxe...Well I put the 4850e on the board and no post and no beep codes. I then bought a 5050e CPU but still no post no beeps. Anyway I am wondering if the first cpu (4850e) could have been shorted and killed the new board? any thoughts?

Possibly. I once had a faulty 486SX CPU kill two boards in a row before I just tossed the chip. I know the boards were killed because they were tested working prior to that chip being installed, and tested dead immediately afterwards.

Wow...Thanks Zap..That may be what happened to me. Wonder if there is any way to test the cpu other than putting it in a motherboard? Local computer shops want 30bucks just to test a cpu...any other thoughts

Absolutely YES it can. I made the mistake of having my brother install his own cpu and he force the cpu in the socket and bent a pin and touching another pin. I ended up frying 3x motherboard before I found out what he did. So be careful.

i once saw a faulty motherboard on a robot lawnmower that killed the electric engine... in such a way that it killed any replacement motherboard, in such a way that it killed any replacement engine... took a while to figure that one out but we verified it and amazingly it was true...

back on topic... absolute a shorting cpu CAN kill a motherboard. ANY shorting piece of electrical equipment can ruin anything its plugged into.

If it is a retail boxed CPU, RMA it to AMD.

The 4830e is oem and past the 30 days. But I now wonder about my new 5050e which is retail. I put it in the motherboard that was rma'd. If that motherboard was killed by a shorted CPU (4850e) could it have shorted the new 5050e when I tried it. When I did that I had no clue the motherboard was bad. I am worried if the new cpu also got shorted, when I get my new board which newegg has shipped if it will kill that board. I don't want to get caught in a loop.

Yes I have..My first post explains that an old PSU blew up taking out the MB and CPU. I bought a new psu and confirmed it works on another system.
