Will AM4 be around for awhile?

I was wondering what the future plans for AM4 are? If I were to build a new Ryzen system using a B350 or X370 motherboard and wanted to upgrade to a newer Ryzen chip (think R5 3600 or R7 3800) in a few years on the same motherboard; is that going to be possible?

AMD has a very good track record in supplying new boards for old sockets as old as 2006 CPU with one ASRock N68C-GS/FX AM2/AM3/AM3+ combo board compatible. Try that with Intel, absolutely horrible, I can't get new LGA1155 boards anymore, although they still feel brand-new and modern socket to me. I can't stand Intel anyways, as well as Asus. Two of my biggest enemies.

Not what the OP is asking.

Op: AMD initially announced that AM4 would be their main socket at least until 2020. No reason to suspect this has changed. In general, AMD tends to keep their sockets for longer than Intel, and to keep compatibility where possible (FM2/FM2+ for example). I wouldn't worry.

They don't change sockets like underwear (like the competition). Definitely one of their best and most versatile attributes.

Okay, this is good news and what I wanted to hear. Now I just need to decide if I actually need to upgrade. Cursed i5 2500k still runs games great (esp w/my new RX480 4gb). Sigh, I guess that's a good problem to have, but damn - it's already been 6 years since I built my current rig.

Haha, that's true. I think if Ryzen 1600 could reliably hit 4.4 - 4.5 ghz overclocked it would have already been a done deal. I can't buy a chip slower than my 4.2Ghz 2500k - it just wouldn't look right.

I went from a 4.2 2500k. It's not slower. Ghz isn't everything. There's also IPC.
