Check out this Intel price-cut plan, and then tell me which month you'll even consider buying an Intel CPU again... Don't forget adding the extra price for RDRAM...

Also, merry christmas to you all!

No, AMD still won't be trusted by bussiness and they are the ones that count. I personaly just switched to Intel from AMD because AMD refused to resease dual athlons. They are waiting till late spring and I don't have the time or the money for new memory as well.

You do have a good point there, Dually. But, seriously, how long will it take for larger companies to change their minds? Remember, the P4 is mainly for home users...

the problem w/ AMD right now is that their DDR solutions are a bit late to market. Also, the prices of DDRSDRAM is higher than expected and believe it or not, they are more expensive then RDRAM at the moment. This will probably hurt AMD's chances in the spring... we have to wait and see though. Also, one thing holding AMD out of the business market is the lack of SMP. When (if ever ) the 760mp chipset comes out... it will get amd's foot in the door w/ a workstation/server based solution. After they prove themselves there... then will come the the orders for single processor workstations. Maybe then we will see Compaq deskpros w/ AMD inside instead of just the crappy presario line...

AMD couldn't take over this Spring if Intel handed it to 'em on a Silver plate. They don't have the FAB capacity.

DaddyG is right.. it's all about fab capacity. Market shares isn't really important, ASP and profitmargins are much more interesting. AMD needs to gain as much ground with the large system vendors as possible and at that they're doing a great job at the moment. Vendors are reluctant to use the P4 because of RDRAM price, which will mae the systems ungodly expensive to produce, thereby putting pressure on the vendors own profit margins. With the cheap AMD parts they can keep some of the price difference between AMD and Intel parts for themselves, so right now there's every reason for using AMD parts for system vendors. Only real con is that they don't have the marketing handed to them on a silver plate like with Intel but needs to do the work themselves... however I firmly believe it is worth it for those who choose to, because the Intel marketing really doesn't strengthen the individual vendors own brand, like real self paid for marketing would.

since the benches came out, athlon beats P4 in business apps hands down. Now, Fab capacity is a good argument. Last i heard, the AMD Dresden FAB still had an extreme amount of excess capacity. Something over 50%. Now, this may be estimated future capacity because it's not ready to produce anything, but i was really surprised at that figure. If that's true, i think AMD can flood the market, but can't afford to because they are already selling at dirt prices compared to what we're used to. Right now, i think they only produce enough to fill the demand at their prices.

Hmm...with soft consumer PC sales, AMD is not going anywhere soon. They have to keep on executing like they have for the past 1 1/2 years, and keep new technology coming. It will be difficult to get into coporate market, they need the backing of system integrators like IBM and compaq. AMD really need to work closer with chipset company like via to make sure the compatibility and stablity is improving, and if they can do all those and basically maintain the sales they have right now, in one or two years, AMD will do much better. Hey, have some patience, AMD just had first profitable fiscal year in a long long time. Too bad the PC market is suck right now, but as long as AMD keep up the good work, they will take over maybe spring 2002!!
