Will CPU-integrated graphics (Sandy/Ivy bridge) beat out board-integrated graphics?

With all this integration, it seems Intel is definitely forging into the graphics realm in a big way. Maybe that's their strategy to take a chunk of business away from AMD, other than just going head to head in CPU realm.

This makes me wonder whether the market will follow Intel, or will the motherboard integrated graphics still be the norm in non-discrete GPU setup? It seems for people buying high performance CPU, the last thing on their mind is to give up on a discrete GPU to match the CPU.

AMD is doing the same thing with Fusion. What it does is save both companies money by only having to make 1 chip instead of 2. So this will most likely end integrated graphics on the motherboard.

This. The only place I see a future for MB integrated graphics is on server boards, and theirs are ALWAYS the bare minimum they can get away with.

The overwhelming vast bulk of boxes sold are not gaming machines, there work/business/average home user macines.

If this shaves a few $ off the purchase price and makes intel a few $ more then its good for Intel.

The consumer/business user wont realy care they have integrated graphics because they wont be gaming on it, aero is about the hardest it will get pushed.

Intels obviously gambling on making more money from selling these chips to integrators and therefore make the use of die space worthwhile, than the slight waste of die space to the handfull of hardcore gamers.

i think you're missing the big picture...i don't think it's about trying to get more presence in the graphics market, so much as it is representative of the cpu/gpu realms becoming one. it's gonna happen eventually, and this is where it starts.
