I remember how it was seeing CD-R drives get gradually faster. DVD Burners seem to be stuck at 16X

why?

Isn't 16X DVD same rotational speed as 16X CD?

Maybe 16x DVD is the equivalent of 52x CD. Since Blu-Ray and HD-DVD is coming, I don't see the reason for DVD to go any higher.

18x is the fastest for a dvd burner currently. any faster wouldnt really be economicall feasible. 18x can already burn an entire dvd in less then 4 or 5 min. at any higher rates, you risk breaking the dvd in the drive. i remember there were really high rates of disks being shattered while burning or running at 54 or 56x back in the days.

DVD 16x is 3 times as fast a CD 52X.

DVD 16x = 22.1MB
CD 52x = 7.8MB

The two transfer rates are achieved with a single laser and with the disc spinning very near at it's physical limits. (10000 rpm IIRC) Faster rates will need mutliple lasers and will be much more expensive than the $30 drives we have today.

18x dvd burners are hype, they're bairly a hair faster then 16x drives.

a buncha years ago I bought a Kenwood TrueX 72X cd-rom. It was BLAZING fast, of couse it died within 60 days, as did I believe 100% of the drives. The dual laser technology was interesting, and I think should have been researched and worked on further. While I don't know details about how burners work so Ic an't possible say "it'd be easy!" I'm sure they could come up with multi-laser burners. Then we could get faster burns, with lower disc speeds. I know my TrueX drive spun about what a 32x drive does. And it was seriously 2+ times faster then any CD-ROM drive I've ever used, even up until today. With 2 lasers on a burner we could see a dvd burn in like 3 minutes that would be awesome. Obviously this isn't as easy as I'm making it out to be or some company would have already released it. But, I think this has to be the future, as BlueRay burners will take forever to burn the disc's when they hit the 100gig mark.

as everybody has already said, 18x DVD burners have been out for a while now and there is work on a 20x drive. beyond that, and the speed of the disk risks breaking the media.

I have an 18x samsung DVD burner and I honestly cannot tell a diference from my 16X lite-on. Buy whatever you can get a good deal on because if you burn a lot of DVD's they don't last that long anyways.

I bought one of those drives back in 2000. I still have it and still works to this day.

16x is about the same rotational speed as a 52x cd. DVD have a higher ultimate speed because the spec provision higher mechanical strength for discs. Going a whole lot faster would require multi beam which would be a little easier to acomplish on a dvd than a cd because dvd have concentric tracks and not a helical track.

if they ever figured out that truex stuff for dvd. doesn't seem to be much demand really, 16 is pretty damn fast. with dual/quad core copying quick doesn't bog down systems these days
