Will having more RAM on Windows 2000 dual 1GHz benefit RC5 or SETI?

RAM is inexpensive nowadays. I'm thinking of upping my RAM from 256MB to 1 GB (PC-133). Both RC5 & SETI are running in this machine.

The thing to do is do a CTRL+ALT+DEL and look at the performance tag.

Now find your Commit charge peak (Bottom Left as you look at the four boxes) If this isn't getting close to your physical memory total (Top Right) then more memory isn't a lot of use.

Seti will realy only benifit if when the machine is idle your memory usage is more than you physical.

I think this won't be the case with 256Mb.

RC5 won't benefit from more memory. It just depends on the CPU.

With SETI@Home you'll not see a performance increase by adding a lot of RAM. If you've got 256MB now and go to 1GB then you're unlikely to see any difference. You'd be much better off getting some quality CAS2 RAM (so you can run CAS2). I don't do rc5 so I dunno about that.

IsOs, Faster, high quality RAM is the trick with SETI: high FSB speed, BIOS settings for CAS2, 4-way Interleave and Turbo(Via chipset), etc.

RC5 is small enough to fit into cache and memory speed doesn't matter. That is why I have all my Intel systems with 66 MHz FSB running RC5 and have all my SETI stuff at 100 to 133+ MHz FSB systems.

I have found that the minimum amount of RAM for SETI, to all MAX BIOS memory tweaking, is 128MB (2 x 64MB modules). For RC5 either 32 or 64 MB under Windows will be fine, assuming the box is dedicated to RC5. I have 256MB of RAM on three boxes that get used for lots of other things. The dedicated boxes all have less. So, putting more RAM in the box will only help IF you are running other tasks that benefit from large amounts of RAM. An example might be PhotoShop where you are manipulating large scanned images.

Then again there's bragging rights. How many folks can say that they have 1GB of RAM?

BTW I've had a couple of PC's with just 64Mb running SETI fine ,just as long as you don't open too many other programs as well

The system is at CAS 2. There's no 4 way interleave that I can find in this MSI 694D.
