Will hell freeze over before we can buy an x800xt without selling our kids?

I have a great rig I would like to use when it's finished but I think it would be a waste to put anything less than a x800xt or 6800 ultra in it. The only extra vid card I have is an ancient ATI Rage Pro 16MB!

Although I could play Zork at 1600x1200 with it. Or I sell my 1st born on ebay for the prices they are going for.......Hmmm, decisions.....

Sorry, I have to vent. I'm sure I'll never get my x800xt from Gateway.

hmmm maybe do some splinter cell and break into a warehouse and steal yourself one.....

but yes i do agree that they are outrageously overpriced. and by the time they come down to an acceptable level games are out that demmand more and more... theres no way to keep up.

If everyone wasn't so ravenous to get these cards, maybe some stock would build up. Vendors are getting cracked cheeks from smiling so much because a lot of people are falling for the price gouging.
There's no law against trickling products to market for manufacturers, but it may be a good idea to enforce some guidelines upon them by the governments hand. Dunno.

This absolutely sucks. I have ordered all my parts for my new rig except for the video card. I can't find an Ultra or XT for $500 or if they are priced at that level they're sold out. Some a-holes have bought multiple cards to try and screw the others of us who haven't been able to get our hands on one.

Waiting patiently, losing patience with each day!:disgust:

I actually gave up on getting the X800XTPE card for now. Nobody has it for a reasonable price. It goes for $800 Canadian before shipping or taxes.

I can get the 9800PRO for less than $200 Canadian (reseller price) before taxes and shipping.... I got a GeForce4 4800 now so I don't know if it would be worth it.

I think I'm just going to wait. Its not like I can't play the games I want to play. I'm playing CoD online with max game settings (no AA and AF) and it works great.

I think we might have to wait a few more months until prices drop, but before XMas. If you wait till XMas there won't be any arround yet again.

Depending on the kids I say go ahead and get the x800xt now and save yourself some money in the long run.

I still don't see where there's a reason to get an X800/6800 yet.

The next generation games are not out yet.
Even if they're coming soon (Doom 3 anyone?), we don't know if they're good.

What happened to the age old practice of waiting til the game you want to play on the card is out before upgrading. I think a lot of people are going to feel awful silly when Half-Life 2 gets delayed another 6 months

This is a very good point. Some people want to play Halo/unreal2k4/Farcry at high settings. That is the reason behind many peoples' purchases.

That's correct, I'm not too concerned about the games that will come out, who knows when. I want to be able to max out the games I have now because they look great with my 9800Pro I'd love to see them on the latest and greatest video cards.

Would you mind sharing where you can get a 9800 Pro for less than $200 CDN? The 9800 Pro's (128MB, but 256-bit) I've seen are all still close to $300 CDN.

Thanks!

Yeah....hehe this is the ATI discount pricing for employees I bet.

Here is the quote my friend gave me:

1US = 1.325CDN

ATI 9800Pro 128mb = $175 CDN ($132US)
9800Pro 256mb = $200 ($151)
X800Pro = $290 ($219)
X800XT-PE = $350 ($264)

Now I wanted to upgrade my long-time dead videocard...but after hearing these prices for the latest generation of cards, I am very reluctant to get "ripped off" by at least 50%. The current pricing for old generation of cards is more reasonable but the new cards' market prices are ridiculous at the moment.

I bought an x800 XT PE from bestbuy.com for $499.99, and received it July 7. I wouldn't count on gateway ever getting you that card. Seems like compusa and bestbuy are the 2 places you can get the card at MSRP.

It's a vicious circle. That's the way it was and that's the way it will always be.
Some ppl visit forums for the first time and get so passionate about video cards and hardware in general,in such a small time period.
With the time passing by, experience will teach them that patience and good timing is your best friend.

the 800xt pe is the first vc to come up on accessories/video cards... It's still there, or there again. It's just got a spot by itself at the top

They haven't exceeded the 2-4 weeks pending yet, so I'm not sweating it.

They'll be out in time for Doom III and I can go back and play all my other games at high res with AA/AF on. Can't Wait!!!

Halo/far cry/ut2k4 run great on my 8500

Of course you have to realize that everyone's definition of "great" differs. While UT2k4 easily runs at 1280x1024 with Max Detail settings on my 8500, the first 2 games are a different story.

It is impossible to play either game at above 1024x768 Max settings. Even at medium settings they are at 35fps and below which are not regarded as great frame rates for a FPS. Now if you consider that many use AA/AF, the 8500 shouldn't even be considered a videocard at this point.

Trust me, if you got a faster videocard, you would never be able to go back. When I first got 8500, I could play MOHAA at 1600x1200 max everything with AF enabled. Then with newer games I found that I had to disable AF, then i had to lower max detail to medium and then resolutions started to drop and now any new game like NFS:U, Halo, Far Cry struggles at 1024x768 medium detail! Now i've finally realized that I have to get a videocard as I cannot suffer any more graphical sacrifices, or I might as well start playing console games at 640x480. You have to draw the line somewhere. Since 8500, there have been Geforce 4, 5, and now 6 = that's 3 full generations on the Nvidia's side (8500 was competing with geforce 3). On Ati's front, there was 9700Pro, 9800xt and now x800 series (arguyable another 3 full generations or 2.5 if you wish). So since Geforce 4 4600 was 30% faster than 8500, and 9700Pro was often 100% faster with AA/AF enabled than geforce 4 series and 9800xt was 30% faster than 9700Pro and now x800xt pe is at least 100% faster than 9800xt, your videocard is roughly 260% slower than the fastest card out right now.

To put it bluntly, where as in a new game one card will get 75 frames and 8500 will be struggling getting 25-30 at the same settings. But that's not what usually happens. In reality once the card becomes too slow, it will usually give you 5-8fps while the new generation will give you 50-70 at equivalent quality levels.
