its the end of my senior year in HS, i really want to go into Med School and i will enter Pre-Med this summer, but i dont know if i can do it. here is my accomplishments, do you think i got what it takes to get thru premed and eventually make decent on the MCAT?

ME
Will graduate in May 2004 with highest honors
GPA 4.22
Rank in class 7 out of 137
ACT score 22

my ACT score worries me, but money should not be a big problem for me. are there many doctors with this low of ACT score?

it's impossible to tell for sure since you're just a h.s. senior... i mean you have like 4 years for everything to go wrong

but seriously a lot of people go into college thinking they're going to do this or that and then completely change their minds.

Med school is about $30K/yr plus you have living expenses. Are you independently wealthy or something?

What's wrong with your parents helping pay for your education?

Schadenfroh - your ACT score is pretty low compared to your GPA, how difficult is your high school? 7th out of 137 says something though, either you're reasonably intelligent, or the rest of your class is pretty dumb. Don't worry about whether you'll get into med school right now. You might realize when you start taking some classes in college that you don't even WANT to be a doctor anymore. You'll have plenty of time to change your major, something like 40% of people do.

this is a very good question... i finished med school last may..... its a long frickin road, and i still have the majority of my residency left.

if you study hard enuff, you can do it, but think seriously about what you want out of life. it is a huge sacrifice. the money is great, but you will miss out on a lot of things in life like your twenties, and youll probably never have a normal family life. youll miss most of your kids growin up.

think long and hard my friend

We can't tell you since you're only in HS.

I remember how over half of the A&S school at my undergrad declared themselves as pre-med...by the end most of them weren't even going to med school.

Did you study for the ACT? How many times did you take it? If you studied and took it more than once, then I dont think you have much of a chance of doing well on the MCAT. The ACT is a joke compared to the MCAT. But I believe that with hard work anything is possible so if you really want it, get ready to work your ass off.

you MAY want to work on your grammar first. But let me tell you, i had like a 4.17 GPA in HS, and its about 3.00 now in my seniior year of college (mechanical engineering major). Besides, doctors are not paid nearly as much as they used to be unless you are an uber-surgeon or something of that sort. Good luck though.

It is impossible to tell at this point. You have 4 years of undergrad to make it through first, and any number of things can and will happen. Your ACT score is low in comparison to your GPA, but that could simply mean that you don't take standardized tests very well, which is something you will need to work on prior to taking the MCAT. Don't worry about med school too much though. Enjoy college, go to class, and try your best to learn the material and get good grades.

You may want to consider picking a degree track that will allow you to have a backup in case you either don't get into med school, decide you don't want to go, or decide to drop out once you are there. Many people go into chemistry, biology, biochemistry, microbiology, etc. I would recommend chemical engineering. Check to see if the schools you are applying to (or the one you've been accepted to) have (has) a chemical engineering program with a pre-med option. You will get all the required courses for chemical engineering, but you will also get all the necessary courses for med school. Plus you will have an excellent fall back degree, and making it through the program is very attractive to med schools.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Absolutely nothing, but like you pointed out, medical school is outside the price range of just about every college-aged person. His parents are probably in a much better position to pay for it than he is, and if they're willing to why shouldn't they? He'd be able to concentrate on his studies a lot better without having to work full-time to pay for school. This isn't something frivolos like a car, it's his education. I'm sure his parents will appreciate it later in life when he's able to retire early and not have to put them in a nursing home.

I wouldn't worry too much about the ACT. If you are good at memorization (and I mean really good). You'll make it. Your GPA and class rank seem better than your ACT indicates. Perhaps you're better at math and science? If so, take the SAT's. Maybe you just weren't prepared before or during the test? Its kinda late to take it again, right?

Doing well in high school doesn't translate into doing well at college. I know a few high school valedictorians, pre-med, that didn't do well enough to get into med school.

A bad ACT score won't hurt you at all in your med school applications. You just have to prove yourself as an undergrad. Good luck.

Absolutely nothing is wrong with that. However, if his parents are willing and capable of paying for his medical school education, then that would be a great benefit for him.

I think we can answer that for you in 3 years, once you tell us how you are doing in your undergrad in college. Go ahead and declare pre-med, and you might end up taking chemistry, biology, physics and all taht sorts of stuff. If you are doing ok and enjoy, you will make it in pre-med, as long as you keep in mind that you must practice standarized tests. Right now, your hs stuff looks nice, but it really doesnt' tell anything about college classes and beyond.

i.e, for me, I had a 3.97 gpa, ranked 13/270 people and even graduated a year early in hs, but right now, my college gpa is....well, lets not mention it. It's a little bit on the low side. It's all about motivation.....if you want it, you will need to work on it, and you can do it if you want it bad enough.
