I don't think it's laughable at all. You just see Chrome as it is now, but it will continue to develop and I think it can be quite compelling.

I also think if a truly powerful arm processor becomes available, Microsoft will re-commit to windows-on-arm, perhaps in conjunction with some hardware partners.

There is an entire business case at MS about why ARM doesnt stand a chance. And the same reason why Windows RT ended as a complete flop.

Plus OEMs want x86. Just look at the tablet segment.

Seriously, why would anyone bother with Chrome OS? You can just run Chrome web browser on a fully featured OS and get 100% of its features, alongside the ability to run real apps.

Very old fashioned view of the world. You need a device with a set of capabilities, if chrome OS covers them (web, mail, facebook, office apps, silly flash/html 5 games) then it's a better OS then windows. It's just so easy to maintain. It's a bit like the difference between windows and linux today. Linux has a lot going for it but it's significantly harder then windows to use and maintain (you need to use command prompts, worry about all the bits you put in your linux, sometimes compile stuff, etc), so people use windows even though for a long time linux has had a lot of stuff about it that was better. Windows does all they need and it's easier so they ignore linux. Chrome OS does the same thing to windows.

Actually, it is just the other way around. x86 programs already work in Windows, so it is the much more robust OS compared to Chrome.

While I do think that you could make high powered ARM chips, as it's a more modern ISA than x86, you'd need an OS to run it on. Unless ARM or a PC manufacturer gives Microsoft boatloads of money, there is no incentive to make full blown Windows for anything other than x86.

And you aren't going to spend the money developing a high end ARM processor to run Linux. The market is just too tiny to justify the cost.

It may be all that and a bag of chips. But, unless someone throws boatloads of cash at Microsoft it isn't going anywhere. I'm not seeing anyone in a position to do that. And remember, they'd have to throw more cash than Intel can.

So while I think ARM v8 has more potential than x86, it will never be developed as the money and the market just isn't there.
