Don't expect a waiter to come take your order at STACKED. This casual dining restaurant has no waiters.

Just iPads.

STACKED: Food Well Built expanded its technology-driven brand Nov. 17 with the opening of its third location in Cerritos, California. With an iPad secured onto each table, guests become chefs, building their own meals from base options, topping food to their personalized delight.

"A lot of casual restaurants have some things on menus that are good, some things that are OK, and some things that are not so good," says Paul Motenko, co-founder of STACKED. "We really wanted to do something different and very focused. We wanted to allow our guests to create flavors that they wanted the most."

STACKED founders quickly threw the idea of a rigid menu out the window.

“Our first thought was, we wanted to do a more traditional concept, but we pretty quickly realized with what we were trying to accomplish, that wouldn’t work,” Motenko explains. “People going up to a counter and seeing a menuboard that had literally dozens of choices in each category—it’s too difficult and puts too much pressure on our guests.”

Instead, The STACKED menu offers about 10 prebuilt categories—pizza, burger, salad, soup, and sausage—and if none of those sound appealing, the brand gets personal.

The personal approach is horizontal: In the burger category, for example, guests decide everything from buns, patties, and lettuces to cheeses, toppings, and sauce. They visualize their meals as they build them with a few simple tap on an iPad.

Motenko emphasizes that he wanted guests to order in a comfortable manner. “We had the idea of, what about letting guests order at a touch-screen device at each table, and not have to worry about a server standing over them,” he says. “The iPad answered all these challenges we were facing.”

Heralding a relatively untapped ordering strategy, the STACKED crew still had to deal with iPad pessimists.

“Some people said it sounded like a gimmick, like, ‘I don’t want to deal with an iPad, technologically,’” Motenko recalls. “Others would say, ‘Yeah, I understand what you’re saying,’ but they’d roll their eyes. We were nervous in opening our first restaurant [about] how our guests would respond.”

Customers, luckily, loved the iPad concept.

“Our guests are really appreciating the control they have over the experience, the ability to customize, and the fairness of the pricing,” Motenko says. “That’s something that virtually no other restaurant does.”

I've eaten at this restaurant a couple of times already and love the concept. Plus I only tip 10% instead of the usual 20%. But then again with so many easily accesible options, me and my friends usually end up running the bill pretty high

That would annoy the piss out of me.

I like to talk to a person when I phone up a company as well.

It works for some places, but the traditional restaurant will still use a regular service staff. The tech has been out for wireless networked ordering devices for well over 10 years and is still very rare.

That's not why they wont become popular. Although they already have touch order stations at some mcdonalds and people are too fucking stupid to use them.

I would just stay home and make a phone call if I wanted to order food that way.

If there's going to be someone cleaning the tables, greeting me and showing me to my seat, and bringing me my food why can't I just tell them what I want?

cause they won't speak much english.

and I agree this would be annoying for many. You know what, I'd like to pick my food from home first, then show up at the restaurant with the food ready. Do THAT.

Now doesn't it seem like the dining-out experience is taken away?

Actually I've been predicting this would come along for awhile. Take the middle person out, so there is one less way to make a mistake on the order, not that it can't happen. but your tipping 10%, why tip at all, for bringing your food out? Do you tip at McDonald's too?

Next I predict the same Ipads embedded allowing you to play restaurant/regional games, and change what is showing on the TV's, play music(Juke Box)... Basically an Interactive restaurant

well, most of the time the person bringing the food is a fairly good looking gal. I don't want to be a total cheap ass. plus I order alcohol too

30 years ago they had those pushbutton jukebox like kiosks at restaurants for ordering food and nobody really liked them.

All they did is replace a $50 box with buttons with a $500 ipad.

Sure, True, but we live in a much more interactive world now, people are used to iphone's and Ipad's ... Also, you don't have to fiddle with quarters, and dollars in the machine, it will automatically be added to your final bill. These will be just some of the options available to help create the environment you want to enjoy your meal. Options will be tailored to the type of restaurant your dining. Even going so far as to having events for different nights of the week. Say, Sports night, SciFi night, Romance night, where options provided will be tailored to the event.

I think it opens allot of possibilities.

I like it. It will be popular with the introverts. A lot of places in crowded cities makes waiting for wait staff annoying.

So the food stays the same price? If I'm expected to give up a human wait staff and my sole interaction is with a greasy ipad screen does that mean I save money on my bill?

If you have to/want to interact with someone, I suppose your could interact with the people bringing your food. As far as the greasy Ipad, I would hope that would get cleaned with the rest of the table after each meal. Not everyone is going to take to this format the same, but the younger less social, more connected youth could probably very easily grow into this.

I mean really, what more is the wait staff doing anymore than going to a ipad like device, and entering it in for you. Its just another point of failure, the middle man if you will. This way your order goes right back to the kitchen.

I'd like to think of myself as young (31) and connected (pc gamer and a gadget geek). I just don't see the appeal. I mean why not just order takeout? Same thing. If telling a waiter was too much of a hassle I'd get online and have it brought to my door.

I don't think your breaking down the process enough... True you could just order the food, and have it brought to you, but eating out is more of a social activity. Social in interacting with other people, friends, not necessarily the help. True, you could just invite your friends to your place, but now your talking about cleaning up before they come. Food delivered is not as fresh, and hot. AND now you your still have to cleanup afterwards. So, think of all of the other aspects of eating out that you enjoy, not just your interaction with a person to get your food ordered.

I assume a waiter/waitress would still be involved to bring the food to your table or refill drinks.

if not, you may as well just go to a cafeteria or take-out restaurant.
