Hi folks!!

I'm tryibg to install a dual-OS rig on a friend's computer but I just can't do it!!! I already did it on my PC using Partition Magic, but in miyfriend's it seems impossible....He has already installed WinXP and we're trying to install Win98 SE as a second OS

He has an Athlon 1.2 GHz in a K7ZVA (¿BIOSTAR?) MoBo...he has the following on his IDE controller:

prim. Master HDD 3,2 Gb
prim. Slave: 52x CD-ROM

Sec. Master HDD 40 Gb
Sec. Slave CD-Rw unit

using any other combination will throw a "UNMOUNTABLE DEVICE" error during Win XP setup, but with this combo its fine, I mean, both W98 and WinXP will install.

The thing is that I partioned his 40 Gb Harddisk, installed Win98 SE and then tried to install WinXP hoping for the MS loader to be installed, but it wasn't. Even so that both Windows were on diferent drives, only WinXP was available. There was no boot menu or whatever....

Formatting either HDDs is no problem, how would you do it??? I've thought of taking out the small HDD but my friend doesn't want to (maybe he's fond of it )

PLEASE HELP US OUT!!!!

Thanks!

Set the 40gb as primary master.. its got to be alot faster than that little 3.2gb drive.

Then boot off of startup disk and blow the 40gb setup away using fdisk. Restart.

Go into BIOS and load defaults. Make sure floppy is first boot device, make sure no virus protection is enabled. Save & exit.

Boot off startup disk.

Type in Fdisk /mbr

Launch Fdisk and say Yes to large disk support. Create 1 Primary Partition. Whatever size you want for Win98, assuming your installing Win98 to C: instead of D: or another.

Then create Extended partition.. tell it to use maximum size remaining. The extended partition doesnt get a drive letter.. its just where the logical partitions go.. they are what gets assigned a drive letter.

After its done creating extended partition it will ask you if you want to create a logical drive. You do. Whatever size you choose here will be the size of drive D: .... If you want more than 2 partitions.. don't use all the remaining space.

For example: If you decide to make your Primary partition 5gb then when you create the Extended Partition.. tell it to use the remaining 35gb. Then when its done it will start you on creating your logical partitions. If you decide to use 10gb on first logical partiton then that will leave 15gb of space left to create any more partitions after partition D:

So far that would make:
C:\ 5gb
D:\10gb
Free Space 15gb

After your done using Fdisk on this drive. Next fdisk your 2nd hard drive. Its important you do this now and not later.

When you fdisk the 2nd hard drive do not create any primary partition on it. Only create 1 Extended partition using the maximum size.. then create your logical partitions after that. Why? Because if there is a primary partition on any 2nd hard drive in a computer it will automatically be assigned drive letter D: .... which will throw your drive letter arrangments out of wack. You do not want that, cause if your 2nd hard drive ever fails then all your partitions after drive D: on the first hard drive will bump down a drive letter making your XP unbootable.

After finishing Fdisk then format drive letter c:
Then load startup disk with cdrom support and copy your Win98 cab files to your hard drive, then run setup from those cab files.
After Win98 is loaded boot off of XP cd and have it install to whatever logical partition you want it on.

Here is one of my computers partition arrangements to give you an idea.
The part after the c:\ is the volume name of the drives.

1st Hard Drive:
C:\Cabs - Primary Partition - Fat32 - 5gb - I keep all my drivers, cab files, I386 folder etc on this partition
D:\WinMe - Logical Partition - Fat32 - 12.5gb - This is where WinME is installed.
E:\WinXP - Logical Partition - NTFS - 12.5gb - Where XP is installed.

2nd Hard Drive:
F:\Mp3's - FAT32 - Logical Partition - 10gb
G:\Apps - FAT32 - Logical Partition - 10gb
H:\Storage - FAT32 - Logical Partition - 10gb

I don't know if AKA went off on a tangent, but lemme make a comment.

Even if you already have XP installed, both OSes need to see the same C: drive in order to set up dual-booting the Microsoft way (there are other ways, including free ones. www.xosl.org comes to mind). Both OSes will write files to C:, even if the \Windows and \Program Files are actually elsewhere. As a result, C: needs to be FAT/FAT32 ... no matter which drive it is on. Additionally, you should leave all drives connected when installing the OSes.
