Will it be too risky if I disconnect the FAN on my stock AMD HSF?

Hi there,

I got a 3200+ Winchester running at stock speed with retail cooling unit installed. CPU is ~29C@ idle, ~39C@load.

These figures are really low... I see no reason why it shouldn't work as my CPU is designed to withstand much higher temps than that.

What do you guys think?

Any particular reason why you want to disconnect the fan? Or is it just for $hits and giggles?

I think disconnecting a CPU fan and running it is the stupidest thing one can do, but go for it, when it fries you can always send it back for an RMA and the MB too.

People overclock these CPUs to their limits using stock cooling. I figured that since my CPU isn't overclocked, it will be able to operate with a heatsink with ease. The fan AMD supplied me with is rather noisy... :-/

Without the fan running, your CPU temp will continue to increase until it shuts down on hi temp, or burns up. This will only take about 2 minutes or so at idle.

Yeah chances are if you run in front of the bus everyday it won't hit you either but why would you do that?

Then get a quieter HSF. Just unplugging the fan with no way of providing some airflow to carry away the heat is just asking for trouble.

Get yourself a Zalman CNPS7000 and run it at 1300rpm. Damn near silent.

Why does AMD spend the money to include a fan if it isn't needed?

So no, that is not a good idea at all.

You could mess with it. Without the fan, the temp is going to rise continously (because hot air doesn't get carry out), but it's going to be slow and steady, therefore, the system would have halt (CPU shuts itself) before any damage is made.

Really? I don't find the stock fan to be very noisy at all, and I have a very quiet system. The GPU fan is much louder. Back in the day, the AMD stock fans used to be REALLY noisy!

What is it with people these days and randomly disconnecting critical cooling components?

If you want a silent PC, build one properly.

The AMD retail stock fan is thermally controlled. In a case with poor airflow it will spin faster. At 3K RPM, it's pretty quiet. At 4K RPM it's quite noticeable.

LOL

yeah... it might run for a few mins idle, even longer maybe if you're lucky but that's just ign'ant.

buy a new fan/hs that changes speeds according to temp... they're not that expensiev

My 3400 on non-stock cooling did an emergency shut off before I even got to Windows load screen. This happened when I forgot to plug the fan in. My advice is don't do it, if the fan is too loud for you spend a couple bucks on a quieter option, either fanless or a better fan.

There's an outside chance it could work if you used the lowest-power XP mobile CPU you can get, underclock and under-volt it as far as stability allows, and slap the best HS you can find (preferably one with fins that run perpindicular, rather than paralell, to the ground, or a pin-style one) on it. Make sure adequate air passes by it or have it open to outside air.
