We're actually not that far. Consider that if you wanna do gaming in 1280x1024 that the vidcard is vastly more important than the CPU, the sound card is pretty much the only thing that determines what the sound coming out sounds like, the chipset is the heart of all compatibility issues...
...eventually you end up seeing the CPU as a top level manager
