since longhorn will draw the desktop in 3d, will that slow down gaming performance because longhorn will use some of the system's 3d power in the background?

Likely. But that will just give nVidia et al reasons to sell more/faster cards. Afterall the industry has to come up with something to continue driving demand.

i agree with thorin

on today's average comp you would see some performance degradation. But by the time it is mainstream, new hardwar will even things out

why would it slow things down? shouldn't it NOT draw anything while you're using full screen for something else?

I agree, unless you're gaming in windowed mode, why would it slow down your games?

Wouldn't windows allocate and appropriate some of the graphic cards memory, thereby potentially limitting demanding games?

Just a thought.

Will it just look like 3D or will it actually be rendered in 3D? Pretty big difference. I personally don't see any reason why they would need to render a desktop scene.

Some program several years ago actually made the desktop into a 3d space. It was pretty lame, certainly cool looking but useless for productivity.

It may have been useless but it may have reduced eye strain which might have meant it increased productivity

Who ever told you the desktop will be 3d ?

the latest ver or longhorn doesnt do that & I dont think m$ will implement it.

Btw isnt this off topic? shouldnt this be in the OS forum?

There's actually a short article in the new PC Gamer about gaming on Longhorn. They interviewed Dean Lester from Microsoft (general manager of gaming division). It looks like they want to gear Longhorn to appeal to more gamers, so I don't see how or why they would want it to slow down your gaming. Apparently, they want to integrate an online game browser, and design a way to make it so you can just put a CD (or DVD) in and play without having to install. They mention a few other ideas they have of standardizing gaming on the PC, but don't go into great detail about it.

Bzzt. Wrong. The current build of Longhorn doesn't have it, that's true. But then, it doesn't have most of what will finally be implemented and most of what you see right now will never make it into the final build. Windows will use DX7 class hardware to do all sorts of cool things for your desktop.

Apple's OSX Jaguar uses OpenGL at the desktop level for faster screen redraws, So why couldn't Windows use D3D? I don't think the idea is to have the desktop IN 3d, but to use the D3D api for faster desktop app performance.

Maybe it's just me, but since Longhorn is still so early in it's development I would think it is way to early to even begin to form opinions as to it's ability to run games, much less any software at all. Plus, assuming a 2005 release, we still have 2 years for hardware and software to improve, and that is almost a life time in "computer time". IMHO, it's silly to contemplate this at this time.

:music: ::whistling as he looks around the Longhorn post:: :music:

::EDIT::Someone mentioned that this should belong in the OS Forum - I do agree with them, however since Longhorn isn't an official OS (considering the fact that it's still in Alpha stages) and he was requesting about whether games will slow down in LH warrants a right to post in the General Hardware forums (even though it's all about software )::END EDIT::

I've been trying out LH 4008 and 4015 (Milestone 4 and Milestone 5), and I've learned quite a lot in the past few days about Longhorn and where it will go from here forward. Here's a link to a site that would answer most of your questions.

http://www.wininformant.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=38925

Longhorn will no longer be a minor upgrade of Windows XP... it's going to be a whole new enchilada - new stuffs coming out - API's has been fixed big time (from 64K something in XP to 8K in LH, I believe) - WinFS is going to be implemented in M7 (as a file system much like NTFS, not like the software emulator it is today in M4 and M5) and I won't mention when M7 might be coming out. Microsoft is starting to speed things up with Longhorn now that most of the guys that were working on W2K3 Server project have moved to other projects - most of them moving to the Blackcomb now and of course some of them went to the Longhorn project. One other thing: Longhorn will enter beta-testing sometimes in the fall, probably as soon as October or in early 2004.

This is an image of Windows Scaling in Longhorn (Avalon or Aero API - not sure... one is for the low-end systems.. the other for high-end)
http://www.xpdigitalmedia.com/images/longhorn_4015_graphics_demo.jpg

Gaming in Longhorn is possible right now but not feasible with the massive explorer.exe memory leak (averaged around 135 MB alone - normally as low as 30MB) and the WinFS emulator also leaking memory (85 MB approx.) - I'm only using 512 MB of RAM and Longhorn was performing well for me however I haven't tried any games on my LH OS. Oh yeah, that reminds me... the Plex interface won't be permanent... but I think that's a rumor anyway. Anyway, back to work for me.

UPDATE: LH MIGHT be 64-bit native. Not sure.
