Will Maxtor charge me?

Well this morning I turn my PC on and I hear 6 clunking sounds and then my HD spins up like normal. I know this ain't good. Also since I got it, it takes anywhere from 4-6secs to spin up. Well I called Maxtor today and told the RMA guy the sounds and stuff and he immediately asked for name,address,phone # and if I wanted standard(me ship my drive in for exchange) or advanced(me give a CC# and they ship one out then I send mine in). He didn't even ask me if I had ran any dignostics on it or anything(which I didn't). He just said I should have it within 4 business days. Anyway I went with advanced. But was mainly wondering will they charge me if they get my drive and it ain't dead or making any clunking sounds?

I had to shut down when I called them because I knew they would want a bunch of info off the drive. After I hung up with him I powered on and the HD spun up without any clunking sounds.

they usually dont care.. cc is for fasters cross ship.. so if u dont return old one.. I had a few minor problem and they exchange w/o problem

I was mainly wondering once they get my HD and sees theres nothing wrong(or any clunking sounds) with it will they charge it then?

No, they'll just send you a referb when yours arrives. They will then check your drive out, do the repairs and then it goes on the shelf for the next guy that sends one in.

You could have at least powered it on and off again to see if the noise was a reproducible thing. Did you even consider running some diagnostic tests before you RMA'd the drive? Sometimes noises like that can be caused by disk errors that are correctable by running chkdsk. If everyone RMA'd their drives the first time they heard a strange noise, hard drive companies would have to raise their prices just to stay profitable. I'm not saying that your drive wasn't bad, I'm just saying that I'm surprised a technically competent person such as yourself would leap to that concusion so quickly without any testing.

I don't think they check that sort of thing at most companies. You heard bad sounds (which often happens BEFORE a drive dies). You called them and told them about it. You returned (will return) the allegedly bad drive. I don't see why they would charge you.

You may want to call them anonymously and ask that question (without giving your name, calling from your home phone, or giving them your issue number).

If they say that they will charge you something if the old drive that you send them still works fine (highly unlikely), then it would not be wise to return a drive that works. Simple, really.

What kind of drive will Maxtor be shipping you, and what kind will you be sending them ? I also heard that sometimes they will send you a larger drive if they do not have the similar drive in stock. Is there any benefit doing Advanced Replacement over Standard Replacement for this case ? I will also be doing a RMA on my 40GIG Quantum Fireball AS sigh! How quick is the RMA in Canada ?

RMA in Canada is pretty quick. I've done it before when I had bad sectors and it wouldn't format in FAT32 and had a drive in a few days.
Maxtor will always send you the same drive or better, meaning that if they don't have that drive size, speed, and model, then you will get something bigger, faster and better model if possible. Now older drives are smaller and harder to replace sometimes so generally you will get a better size than what you sent in. Advanced replacement is just cross shipping and will not be anything more special except in the fact that you will get a new replacement drive faster than if you waited to send in your drive first. It will be as fast as it takes for them to send it to you. Heh The only thing is that you will get charged and not reimbursed if you don't send your bad old drive back.
