It's the love of money, which is the root of all evil.

And BTW, if you do a little research, those who have won the lottery... most of them will say, "They were better off before they had the money".

It's not true for all of them. But some.

Most people "think" not having to work, and having any possesion they wanted is "Happiness", but it's far from it.

Money may buy content ness and satisfaction, but it cannot bring you "happiness".

It would let me volunteer to do the things I really like doing, rather than worry about an income. I think that would make me happy.

well i'm already happy. i have two of the smartest kids in the world, and my fiance is freakin awesome... now when it comes to money, i don't make much of it, so sometimes it's a stress point in the relationship.. so if i had an absurd amount of money, i would be less stressed.. that might mean happiness to some.. i would be able to afford a house in a good neighborhood, and send my kids to the best schools, and be able to have two reliable cars, and have lots of fun toys...

Money does not buy happiness, but the absence of a sufficient amount leads to unhappiness. If you have to work 12 hour days, can't afford to take vacations, and still can't quite pay the bills, or barely make it from paycheck to paycheck while dodging calls from the electric company about a past due bill, then it's going to be quite difficult to be happy.

However, once you have enough money to pay for the basic necessities in life with some money left over, how happy you are really depends on your attitude toward what you own and what you want to own.

yes. unlimted amounts of money would buy me happiness, I think. I have the other things, a great family, a great GF of 3.5 years, working towards a masters in EE (although im still an undergrad), friends... The only thing I dont have is unlimited spending power, which I do like oh so much.

That said, I dont try and fill voids in my life with stuff. I just enjoy playing with new things, and it makes me happy to do so. If I could buy whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted, and sell it when I was done with it without any worry about finances I would be where I want to be, basically. That is what I am working towards.

Does money buy me happiness? NO!!! I grew up surrounded by it, and am in a position where I can and do buy pretty much what I want... well except for a Vanquish anyway, and you know what? I lead a fvcking miserable life. Happiness from money? ha. I mean I like my job and my house and stuff. I have no wife. No g/f. No prospects. No real friends.

Yes. My dream life would be travelling the world. If I could get just $1000/month for the rest of my life I could live very comfortably. This is because 3rd world countries cost about $600/month to live nice in and the extra would be for going to 1st world countries every now and then. Then I'd need some backup money for medical insurance.

Now if I had an absurd amount of money I could live my dream even more comfortably and do other fun stuff I guess.

So yes money would definately buy me happiness.

Absolutely.

I'd buy up huge amounts of land, fund tons of educational programs in Mississippi, hand NASA a blank check and tell them to put us on the moon by 2010 and on Mars by 2015. I'd open a school for everyone to come and learn and contribute.

I'd randomly visit my projects when I felt like it and bass fish the rest of my days away. At least until it was time to head to the moon and beyond.

You can be wealthy and get into heaven. But those who put their faith or hope in money and are attached to the material things of this world are not willing to accept salvation and put their faith in Christ. That is why few rich people truly receive salvation; too many have their hope in things that pass away.

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

Nah. I'd like to have a handful of money that allows me to quit working and travel, and that'd make me happy, but I'm already happy and I don't want anything. Except an 07 Challenger, and I can get that for myself.

Money itself can't buy you happiness. It is HOW you USE IT to BETTER yourself and others.

Let's see...

Never have to work
Have houses in prime beach locations
All the cool gadgets
Go travel whenever I want
Able to spend more time with family and friends

Would money make me happy? Not as such, but the things it can give me would make me happy.

I would be happy with 100k/yr I think... adjusted for inflation accordingly. Also assuming safe investments. I would still need to work though, but truly doing something I love without the worry of having to pay the bills.

Actually, all I would like to have is my school loans blown to pieces

Yes, although not directly in itself. It would allow myself and my family to do and share things together that would make us happy. I wouldn't have to pick up 2-3 extra days a month to make things easier. My kids most likely wouldn't go to public schools, and (I would assume) receive a much higher quality education. I myself would quit work and go back to school. Then when all was said and done, I could do something where my wife and I could work together, for ourselves, doing something we both enjoyed. Hell, it could be running a Hawaiian food joint, or designing/building/running a golf course (depending on the amount of "absurdness"). Wife would probably love to run her own scrapbooking store or something.

So, my answer is yes.

I'd have to say, "Yes, it would help," since most arguments I have with my wife revolve around money and the lack of it.

Yeah, what I was going to say. Overall, I think most people will have greater potential to obtain happiness with ungodly amounts of money than if they were living in penury. Having money simply provides more options. You can choose all trypes of paths; some leading to loneliness and depression, others leading to success and happiness.

Personally, I feel that I could be quite happy with gobs of cash. Invest, buy a few condos around the world, and donate to charity. If having money will lead me to a busier lifestyle in which I won't be able to do the research/clinical appointments that I feel make my current contributions worthwhile, then I could take the other side and donate money to keep those like me doing the work that they do.

Of course, after the sold gold house and the rocket car, anything will keep me happy.

The richest person who ever lived, Solomon, will tell you that everything "under the sun" is vanity. He had great palaces, tons of gold and wealth, tributes from most of the known world, hundreds of concubines, and even the greatest rulers of the world sought his advice. He tried a little bit of everything, from great architectural projects, to drinking alcohol, to having comedians perform for him. In the end, what he discovered is that even with all that wealth he could not find joy. A life "under the sun" - a life filled with the pursuit of material things and without God - is empty. His "experiments" and conclusion are recorded in the book Ecclesiastes.

You don't have to go that far back, though, to see that money does not buy happiness. Countless wealthy people in this era will tell you that it doesn't.
