Will my cpu bottleneck a r9 390?

It's a Q6600 oc'd to 3.5 with a pair of HD 5850 in xfire running at 1920x1200. Although I'd love to do new cpu/mb/ram upgrade too that's just not possible at the moment. Would it severely hold back the gpu that it wouldn't be worth spending the money right now?

Absolutely not worth the $, massive CPU bottleneck. Your best short-term bet is to sell each of the 5850s for $30-40 and buy a single used $80-100 HD7950/7970 and start saving up for a full system upgrade.

This is with a single 980.

No arguing there. That's a pretty old CPU.

You'd be surprised how cheap you can piece together a machine with newer tech though. I do it all the time. Buy stuff that's barely used and save yourself some money for a good card when you have a better core system.

Hell, I have spare parts lying around that would fair better than your current setup. If you're interested let me know... I could certainly benefit from parting with some stuff.

That's insane how much of a jump you get from Penryn to Lynnfield. Back in the day it didn't seem like that much, but the FSB certainly didn't do C2Q any favors as it's aged.

The R9 380 will be fine for your CPU, have a look at my Core 2 Quad 9450 + HD7950 review bellow.

If you like faster GPU than the R9 380 i will suggest you upgrade the entire system.

Your q6600@ 3.5 is like a q9550@ 3.3 which is a good match for a gtx 950/ r7 270 at best.
honestly 2 585o's overclocked are close to maxing your CPU when they scale well.

I threw my gtx 960 in my q9550 @4.0 and it was much slower than my i3 6100 with the gtx960.
I wouldn't waste money upgrading that machine.

I know. I had Q6600 @ 3.4Ghz and then i7 860 @ 3.9Ghz. Even in recent years I still read from time to time how C2Q -> Nehalem/Lynnfield wasn't a good upgrade, other than HT. All I have to say is those gamers are either ignorant to facts or haven't read any newer reviews. The move from C2Q->Nehalem/Lynnfield for games is greater than any of the recent generations. Unfortunately, in newer gamers even the Nehalem/Lynnfield and SB i5s are starting to bottleneck modern GPUs too. Other than i7 2600K OC, everything below is it on its way to upgrade heaven. Once we have GPUs as powerful as Fury X CF with 14nm FinFET gen, I wouldn't be surprised if i7 2600K->3770K gen will also start to become a big bottleneck. Although DX12 may change this. By summer of 2016, Haswell i7 4770K will be 3 years old, while i7 2600K will be 5.5 years old! Time flies.

I just hope it will bee good enough for few more years to run games

We need to move off of DX11. That's where the bottleneck is, not the CPU.

I recommend upgrading to a Skylake i3 and saving up for a Kaby Lake i7 down the line.
