Will my psu handle a 4890?

Without adding everything up I suspect you will be right on the edge and I'd recommend getting a new psu if you can swing it. You can try it, if you have trouble like system restarts etc. then you'll know for sure.

Is that the Noistaker II?? If so yes but you'll be right on the edge. I'm running one in a little different rig and mine's an 485W.

No its the whisper 2, and only 4 months of actual use

I'm just gonna give it a go. I'm only gonna run one 1tb hard drive with it also.
If it don't work out I'll just get this Antec 750watt 56amp monster for 109$ shipped for some 58xx crossfire action later on.

I just built a system for my nephew with a Cooler Master 550W, Q9550 @ 3.4 Ghz and a 4890, it is running just fine, v12+ @ 11,89. But I think it is on the edge also.
So I think it will work just fine, but adding another hardware, or OC too far, probably might get you into troubles.
But probably will hold until your next upgrade just fine.

It may depend on your overclock with the q9550. You could easily blow your power budget running furmark+prime or OCCT PSU test.

Looking at the 12v load piecewise

35w (50w) e5400 <- (overclocked)
90w (130w) q9550 <- (overclocked)
130w (200w) 4890 <- (furmark)
30w chipset
30w fans/HD etc

lower mid upper bound (not OC / OC no furmark / OC furmark)
e5400 225w(19a) / 240w(20a) / 310w(26a)
q9550 280w(23a) / 320w(27a) / 390w(32a)

So there would be some additional draws on the other componets, but you would really have to push it to near the edge of your PSU. Of course if you get to extreme levels of overclocks and voltages, all bets are off, but a good q9550 will do mid 3ghz at default voltages.

Thanks for all the responses.

I believe my e5400 is 65watts? not 35 watts.

I haven't researched yet but I believe my 9800gtx+ 1gb power usage with overclock is close to a 4890 @ stock.

Edit: Looked it up and the newer version (55nm) 9800 gtx+(gts250) uses less power then the 4850.
All 1gb versions are (55nm) ,so It's basically a 1gb gts250.

I plan on a 3.8/4.0 overclock with the Q9550.

Still hoping for a lower power hd5830 instead of a hd4890.

Edit: Wow the hd5850 uses less power then the 4890.

Now that I think about it the 4890 is not much of a upgrade, I'm looking into a 58xx card.

Thanks guys

Well at 34 amps you have 408 Watts available for the 12 V rail. 4890 sucks an absolute maximum (Furmark) of 190 Watts and you are left with 218 W for the rest of the components. Now, let's say that you hate your q9550 CPU and squeeze some 160 Watts out of it, then you'll be left with 58 Watts for the ram, hard drives, 7 fans and whatever. It's too close in my opinion. You need a new PSU.

65watt TDP thermal design power - basically the cooler design for that class of chip. Actual usage especially for that wolfdale 45nm half cache disabled is much much less. Even overclocked.

I haven't researched yet but I believe my 9800gtx+ 1gb power usage with overclock is close to a 4890 @ stock.

A 9800gtx+ can eat a lot of power especially if the voltage is raised. Probably equal to a 4890 under furmark.

At 3.8-4.0ghz and the extra voltage needed to get to that level, you will be crossing the 150w level.

BTW a 5870 even under furmark uses 10-20w less than a 4890.

In my opinion you could do the q9550 overclocked with the 5870 with your PSU as long as you don't run the synthetic benchmarks a the same time.

My edit above:

Thanks guys. I'll be looking for a 58xx series card when avalability is up and the prices calm down.
