9700 Pro

Smooth at 1280x1024 or at 1024x768?

EDIT: If not....what single upgrade would help me out the most?

On a side note...I've read that Q4 wont come with MP built in.......I think that would be a significant mistake if true.

Doom 3 will not have multiplayer at launch. I dont think anyone really knows anything about Q4 yet... not sure though.

In terms of your other question, I'd just stick with your system until the games are out, then see how it stacks up and choose what to upgrade. No reason to do anything now if you can play all the games you like well (which you can with that system).

Nobody can say for sure... and anybody who tells you they can is lying. Nobody knows exactly what the hardware requirements will be for games that aren't even in beta testing yet. We can predict... but as far as saying you need such and such hardware to run this game with such and such settings... nobody can say for sure yet. We have to play the waiting game unfortunately :frown:

Speculating your existing performance on a non-existant (RTM'd) is silly. You saw the demo for Doom3, it was rumored to be a 2.0+Ghz P4 system with a Radeon 9700pro. Seems like you have the same, I'd say you get similar performance. None of this matters, of course, until the game gets released.

I'm waiting to buy my next system, 2-3 generations past what Doom3 needs to run at 30fps.

i doubt it

if by smooth you mean 80+ FPS no way

just wait till the game actually comes out then the hardware required to run it will be out

i doubt a 5900 Ultra/ Radeon 9800 Pro and 3.2 Ghz HT with 1 Gig of Ram would run it smoothly though so don't worry about it

They are designing doom 3 to run on GF3 min specs, so i figure that a R9700 could run it pefectly ok.

Actually, theres benchmarks all over with doom 3 in them. Their not official demos or anything, but their benchmarks from doom 3, with the engine, which is what counts. Their early benchmarks which means by the time the game comes out, it should improve in running on all computers in general. Tomshardware and Hard|OCP both had big articles benchmarking the 5900 Ultra/9800 pro 128/9800 pro 256 and misc other ati and nvidia cards. From what i remember, both sites benchmarked it on a p4-3.0's. Tomshardware did 2x256 rambus, and Hard|OCP did 2x512 Corsair 3200xms . Benchmarks on it in medium quality were about 80 fps in 1024x768 on the 5900 ultra. High quality, it dropped to about 50 fps. The 5900 ultra beat all the cards, its the best video card out, but keep in mind, its also half a grand. $500-600 for that thing. Id just wait until the games come out, and then buy the next generation video card. No gamer video card is worth over $500. After these companies broke the $400 mark, it became more of a bullshit vidcard/game maker scam. Ever notice whenever ID releases a game, nvidia releases a card that runs it the best, and thats when you see $400-500 video cards. That's a whole other topic though, anyways, heres the links to the articles:

Is this thread a joke? Quake 4?? After that piece of crap they called q3 i don't think there ever will be a quake 4.

If this isn't a joke and you just forgot how much q3 sucked i'll answer the other part of your question. You will be able to run Doom3 at 1024x768 smoothly. Once drivers become optimized you should expect good framerates with AA at that resolution as well. If I were you, i would not upgrade at this time.

Quake 3 was not a piece of crap. The single play wasnt good, but it had great multiplay with tons of awesome mods. Plus it's got beautiful graphics, its the #1 3D graphics engine

Quake 4 is not a rumor, its being devloped by raven using the doom 3 engine. Its not going to be out for a long ass time though, im guessing a year at earliest. Id be really surprised if it came out sooner. Quake 3 was not a bad game at all, it just didnt have the good mods early, and that floor bug, where u could shoot under the floors. The throughwall splash damage crap was stupid, although i won many matches because of it on T4.
Quake 2 was my favorite of the series, it had good guns, only flaw was that it was slow. But I still think it is the best quake game. And uhhh, a 2.4c with 512 mb ram, and even a 5900 ultra will no way in hell run a game "smoothly" with AA on. Come on....thats so not true. That game gets 50-60fps on a 3.0 in 1024x768 with AA on. All i know is, when i get doom 3, its going to be ran at 640x480, with AA on, the way i see it is, you run the lowest cleanest res, and turn on AA, makes it looks as clear and clean as the higher res'. Bleh, just the idea of paying $400 for a damn video card is ridiculous.

Only thing I can see that you'd need to upgrade is your ram, having 1GB might bne nessisary, if you look at how much current games suck up, however it's an easy upgrade when it comes out.

sorry but you need at least a P6-5.3GHZ, 4Gb of RAM, and a Radeon 10500 Pro 512MB system to run Doom3/Q4 smoothly.

its actually funny seeing people argue between doom 3 and half life 2 already. unbeleivable just how much people actually want to be fanboys and have a tribe. pathetic :/

Lighten up dude, its just a joke.
I'm actually looking forward to both of them. I just hope they are spread out a little and dont come out at the same time. There hasn't been a really good single player FPS since RTCW IMHO. I'd like to see at least a few months between the two. Maybe HL2 for Sept and D3 for Christmas time.

Quake 4? Is it really in development. I haev an older issue of Computer Games Strategy Plus laying around and it talked how Quake2 was supposed to be the last one but then the team decided to create the ultimate uber multplayer FPS (later called Unreal Tournament ) so they decided one more go after it...
