The interesting thing is, there's not a lot of CPU horsepower due to come out in the near future. I was reading an Intel roadmap, and the 3.4GHz Prescott is supposed to be out around Christmas, and the 3.6GHz is supposed to be out in March sometime.

So if performance isn't good out of the gate, we may have to wait a while.

Well this site is reporting these official minimum specs from the Carmack himself:
With all the hubbub floating around the net lately about what would and what wouldn't run DOOM³, we decided to bring an end to the system requirement confusion and contact the main man, John Carmack, himself. Here is the official word on the minimum system configuration you'll need to run Doom³.

1GHz CPU
256MB RAM
GF1 or Radeon 7xxx series card

Don't expect to run it fabulous with that system setup , but everything will be playable at least.
Seems a tad on the light side, no?

Just to let you all know.... Both Doom3 and Quake4 are in the works, and they will be done, when they are done.

Will your computer run the game? YES. The engine will detect your setup and adjust accordingly, you may not get all the pretty features, but you will get the best your hardware can support.

P4- 2.4Ghz
512 megs
9700 Pro
Smooth at 1280x1024 or at 1024x768?
1024 x 768 if you're very lucky. Not 1280 x 1024 though.

1GHz CPU
256MB RAM
GF1 or Radeon 7xxx series card
:Q

I wouldn't even run GLQuake on a Radeon 7000, much less Doom3. Something is definitely screwy with those specs.

Actually, theres benchmarks all over with doom 3 in them. Their not official demos or anything, but their benchmarks from doom 3, with the engine, which is what counts. Their early benchmarks which means by the time the game comes out, it should improve in running on all computers in general. Tomshardware and Hard|OCP both had big articles benchmarking the 5900 Ultra/9800 pro 128/9800 pro 256 and misc other ati and nvidia cards. From what i remember, both sites benchmarked it on a p4-3.0's. Tomshardware did 2x256 rambus, and Hard|OCP did 2x512 Corsair 3200xms . Benchmarks on it in medium quality were about 80 fps in 1024x768 on the 5900 ultra. High quality, it dropped to about 50 fps. The 5900 ultra beat all the cards, its the best video card out, but keep in mind, its also half a grand. $500-600 for that thing. Id just wait until the games come out, and then buy the next generation video card. No gamer video card is worth over $500. After these companies broke the $400 mark, it became more of a bullshit vidcard/game maker scam. Ever notice whenever ID releases a game, nvidia releases a card that runs it the best, and thats when you see $400-500 video cards. That's a whole other topic though, anyways, heres the links to the articles:

Toms Hardware Doom III Benchmarks

Hard|OCP Doom III Benchmarks

Woah...looking at those benchmarks....I would say my system has no chance of playing it smoothly unless I make the game sorta ugly.

Look, in all reality if you want to have 50fps at even 1024 with all the eye candy on (which you should) then no, I do not think anyone's system right now will be able to handle it. I am just using past experience and a little common sense. I would love to be wrong, but knowing how things work, the sad reality is we will be forced to upgrade.

yes, Doom 3 and HL2 is being developed so that ONLY 5900 Ultra 256 mb and 9800 pro 256mb combined with a 3.2 Ghz p4 can run it smoothly. you see, ID and Sierra (are they doin HL2???) have no want or need to make a profit from these releases so they are just making it so that 1% of 1% of all the computers in the world can run it...

This is funny, I was going to replace my XP 1600+ athlon with the 2400+ athlon so I can play Doom III in the near future, I haven't thought about replacing my trusty GF 4 4200 yet. We'll see how this pan out.
