My wife has always wanted to print wirelessly from her XP laptop. I will be installing Win7 soon to our regular computer. Is it possible to somehow communicate the two computers and use the nonwireless printer from the laptop? Maybe by using XP mode on Win7? Thanks for any suggestions.

I don't see why it would be any different than sharing a printer from XP -> XP or Vista -> XP. The process for setting up the host computer(Win7) will be slightly different than it's predecessors, but it should definitely be compatible.

It will be compatible but will take some work. They made it easier if you are going from Windows 7 to Windows 7 computer. Unfortunately, they made it harder to go from an XP computer to a Windows 7 computer...

Windows 7 added a configuration forum specially for Home network that do not need elaborat Sharing System.

http://windows.microsoft.com/e...g-files-with-homegroup

Other wise if you want more flexibility and security choose you Windows Network as Work Network and the the Sharing is similar to Vista.

Make sure that the Software Firewall on each computer allows free local traffic. If you use 3rd party Firewall On, Vista/XP Native Firewall should be Off, and the active

Firewall has to adjusted to your Network IP numbers on what is some time called the Trusted Zone (consult your 3rd Party Firewall instructions.

General example, http://www.ezlan.net/faq#trusted

Vista File and Printer Sharing- http://technet.microsoft.com/e.../library/bb727037.aspx

Windows XP File Sharing - http://support.microsoft.com/d...x?scid=kb;en-us;304040 http://support.microsoft.com/d...x?scid=kb;en-us;304040

I've done it. It was easy sharing a printer between 32 bit XP, 32 bit vista, and 32 bit Win 7. It was a pain sharing with adding 64 bit Win 7, because my printer didn't have a 64 bit vista/win7 driver. XP mode doesn't work for drivers, only applications. I just work around by using window xp virtualization to print (the "easiest" way).

HELP!!!

I feel like I've followed all of the instruction.

My laptop that I do all of my schoolwork on is XP-SP3 32bit.

The big machine with the printer attached is now Windows 7 Professional X64.

The printer is a Canon iP6600D (wife likes to print lots of pictures of the kiddies)

All of my computers are on the same workgroup and see each other and I can click on the shared folders etc. etc. etc. I can find the printer on the Win7 machine but I have to manually type in \\SANDY-PC\ip6600dxxx and it tells me that it is going to install a driver now and I say ok. Then I get this.

"The server for the 'Canon Inkjet iP6600D' printer does not have the correct printer driver installed. If you want to search for the proper driver, click OK. Otherwise, click Cancel and contact your network administrator or original equipment manufacturer for the correct printer driver."

So, I browse to the Canon folder and navigate to the drivers and it won't take any of them. So, I installed the printer on the laptop and it prints just fine......so drivers are already on the laptop.......but that doesn't seem to matter.

I went into Printer properties on the Win 7 machine and where it gives you the option to install X86 drivers so people trying to do what I am trying to do won't have to look for drivers and I pointed it to the install disk that came with the Printer and it doesn't like any driver it sees on that disk to use as an appropriate printer driver.

Canon does not offer standalone drivers off of its website. Only a .exe.

32bit/64bit standoff??? XP/7 standoff??? I've gone from a Vista laptop to XP main machine and figured it out all by myself but this one is KILLING ME.

Did you try hooking the printer directly to each computer and printing directly to it? Are you using canon's 64 bit vista driver for win 7 pc?
