Wait! You people remember socketkey? People with the current P4 boards could maybe use the socket 478 cpu too. All they need is someone to make a socketkey for the socket 478 that fills in socket 423.

doubtful. they've got to rework the P4 core, not just shrink the die to reach higher clock speeds. if they don't, AMD's future processors will reign supreme. we already see the P4 getting beat soundly at equal speeds to an Athlon, and we see P4s running as much as 700MHz faster losing to Athlon machines in a given bench. That's pretty scary for a "next generation" processor. my take is, if they don't seriously rework the P4 core (besides the .13u die shrink) they'll be left in the dust. but, of course, that's just my opinion

Well, I'm sure we've all read Anand's wonderful reading material on the
current P4 status.

The Northwood will definetly bring life to P4 sales... But in no
way is Pentium on their deathbed.
.13 Micron... all the way to 4gigz? That would be interesting to see...

Even more interesting would be a Socket type that stuck around for more than 6 months.. ;-(

Hopefully this comes around sooner than later.

Oh, and btw... I'll have to agree with everyone on the side of RAMBUS...

Just because the price is high, doesn't mean you have to shoot it down.

Just to clear the air... Socket 423 will be more than a year old when replaced. PPGA, almost two years. FCPGA, almost two years. Slot 1, two years.

If you want to compare AMD... Slot A lasted about a year, and Socket A is just over a year old.

So, there's really not much difference between the two. And sure you can say that AMD is going to continue with Socket A. But is it even possible to use a Athlon-1.4ghz with a motherboard purchased 12 months ago? And even if it is, who would even consider it? I don't see that pattern being any different in another 12 months, even if AMD does stay with Socket A compatibility.

This will significantly reduce manufacturing costs don't forget y'all so it might seem a bit more attractive of a processor after this...and 512k ondie cache would boost performance more.

For geeks like us, I don't think the P4 will ever have a chance unless Intel makes some MAJOR price cuts and/or improves performance significantly.

However, I don't think the P4 will have bad sales. Consumers (read: Stupid people ) will go with the brand name they know, whether or not that offers the best performance or even the best price.

well, all the roadmaps i've seen have amd staying with socket a, so we will see.

of course you can use a 1.4 ghz chip in a 1 year old mobo, it just wont run as fast and/or you will have to overclock that non-overclockable kt133 chipset with the 12.5 multiplier to hit ~1.4ghz

(the 1.4 is 133fsb isnt it? not really up to speed with the newest amd chips)

-----------------------------

after a little research, i find that they make the 1.4 in 100mhz and 133mhz fsb types, so you could just drop a 1.4/100mhz chip into say a kt7 without any changes to the mobo config

Boy,
Did I lose track of time or what...

Sorry 'bout that ;-p I guess it has been that long..

Perhaps I should have clarified;

I wish these damn people wouldn't keep switching back and forth... sockets to slots to sockets
and etc...

I just hope AMD can keep the heat on Intel as far as pure MHZ goes. If they fail at that the higher Intel offerings will become too expensive.
