Will RIM become the next Nortel?

Does RIM make anything else other than Blackberries and keyboards?

Why MS or Palm haven't mowed RIM over like Cisco did to Nortel when there are money to be made in handheld web/email/phone device.

I think so. Everyone loves them, but since push email what else have they brought to the table?

I worked from them briefly about a year ago and was not impressed.

As smartphone become more and more prominent I do believe RIM will fade.

A blackberry is still a ton better than a Windows Mobile device syncing against Exchange. For one, WM is horrible, so anything running on it is going to be clunky. Second, many, if not most of the devices implementing it are clunky. Past that, what are your options, Good Messaging?

HTC already makes phones that are push email capable. RIM's big claim to fame is their security.

Blackberries are currently THE choice for business smartphones. Pretty much everything else out isn't polished enough or is aimed at the average consumer so it doesn't do as much as a blackberry can productivity wise. MS hasn't run over anything yet because they don't make phones, just the OS for them which is pretty outdated these days. And Palm just doesn't have solid enough devices to take top dog in that market.

I'm surprise that Blackberry survived this long. I wasn't impressed with the device when it just came out 5-6 years ago. Does RIM have anything else up its sleeves or this is the end of the road for them?

The reason that I'm asking is that my broker suggested RIM is the only viable tech stock to buy at the moment.

The Iphone works great syncing with Exchange. It does everything that our organization needs and it's easy to use (which is a super bonus for me). Our examiners love RIM due to their security. However, with strict security policies and remote wipe in place, they've given us the thumbs up with our Iphones.

Who will take the lead in smartphone?

Apple, Motorola, Nokia, or Sony?

iPhone?

They don't technically manufacture the phone.

They designed it yes, but they don't manufacture them.

I used a Treo for a long time and that was the most painful experience of my life. I would never own another Palm product again.

Palm seems to think that those tiny little buttons are a good idea. Give me a fucking landscape oriented keypad ffs so my fingers have a chance at texting properly.

I used to have a Palm Treo 680... I really liked it, at the time, but in retrospect, it wasn't the greatest. I then demo'd all of Palm's products on the Verizon network, and they were all absolutely *horrible*. My office ended up standardizing on them, but I talked them out of requiring me to carry one. I now have a Palm Treo Pro, and I *love* it. It's by far the best Windows Mobile phone I've ever seen, bar none. It simply works, and it does it well. I've seen advertisements for the Palm Pre, and it's extremely disappointing to me, given how much I like my Treo Pro.

I don't think any of them have to take the lead. The entire market as a whole is getting more mature and RIM will no longer stand out as anything special. So, unless they come up with something innovative, something special, I think they will just fade away. (We're talking on timescales of 10+ years here)

Well, they're hiring 3000 employees this year in the midst of a recession...

My entire office whores them though.

blackberry bold is the best phone on the market, period.

RIM has the business community on a lockdown. won't change any time soon.

If they could only get that at a decent price they'd get more buyers. It's a great phone but nowhere near $300 w/ contract great.

Wth, then most tech companies don't make what they sell...

And HTC will eventually beat them all

Why? RIM has been doing everything right. Palm sucks. I am rooting for the Pre, I actually want one. But they don't deserve to wipe anybody off the map after years of fail.
Even if I don't get a chance to get a Pre (won't be going to Sprint. Ever.)...BB's will always be good enough for me. They are fine devices with good call quality, decent mail capabilities, and an OS that isn't sluggish or buggy as hell.

I think once management realizes they can get a lot of the features that people want out of a blackberry(activesync of email, contacts, and calendar) out of the box with an exchange server you may see a decline in RIM. But I dont ever expect them to go away. They have a strong band name. But imo they dont offer anything superior to the competition anymore. Especially for the price.
