Hey all,

Just a quick question as I'm not having any luck getting that OS to install on my Athlon 64 system.

Thanks!

Odd, everytime I try and install, it says that Windows has shut down to prevent damage to my machine. I know there isn't a virus on the drive...I'm pretty good about those and the drive was formatted.

I guess I'll try reformatting and trying again. Just to clarify, its the Athlon64 3000+, Shuttle nForce 3 mobo, 1GB DDR 2700 type set up.

Just an FYI Ive heard and read many many posts about the Athlon 64s having issues booting with memory slower than what is recomended. DDR400(3200) is what is recommended so that might very well be your problem right there.

The 64 bit is hardly done, it may be fun for testing but for stable performance I would want the 32 bit at this time. Can't say why 2k3 would blue screen on an Athlon 64 sounds like a hardware issue to me (not sure how good Shuttle MB are, ).

Well, the board I have is the Shuttle AN50R. I've really liked it so far and it was AMD recommended.

I have two drives in the machine. One is a 160GB SATA drive, the other is a 40GB ATA. The 160GB drive has XP Pro on it, which I rather not touch, being that out of the box my XP Pro CD had no idea what it was. I partitioned the 40GB drive into 3x13GB, after the Server install failed.

As for XP 64, I have it on the first 13GB partition right now and for me, its unusable. It didn't have support for my on board components and wouldn't install from the mobo CD. If my board didn't have optical audio, gigabit lan, and regular lan that I really enjoyed/needed, it wouldn't be quite an issue, but I have my XP Pro side Rendezvous sharing from my PowerBook over wireless to iTunes for PC, then I have a 12' optical cable running to my theatre system. Needless to say, I'm quite used to being able to access music from any of my machines and play it at "full" quality, so I severely miss it...not to speak of the fact that I can't seem to get the network devices to work.

I see on AMD.com, they have a listing for 64 bit Server 2003 for Opteron...think I'd be better off trying to download that one and installing it?

based on what you've described of your setup so far you're probalby just installing this to play around with it and if that's the case you should be fine. Windows server 2003 for athlon64/opteron is still beta.

When odering a new Athlon 64 system should you go with XP Home or Professional for the extra $60.00. When will the OS for Athlon 64 be ready with full version?

Linux is ready now. If you must use Windows you'll have to wait atleast a few more months, I'm not even sure if XP for AMD64 has hit the RC stage yet.
