Will someone please explain to me why The Godfather is considered to be so good?

The ones that don't get it and don't like it because it's boring are the 152 character ADD retard generation. Go play farmville.

Parts 1 and 2 are really good movies. You go to film schools and they study them.

I have this same problem with Citizen Kane. It may have been the first to use a bunch of techniques but that doesn't make it good in my book, just historically interesting.
I don't know what special techniques it may have used at the time. Citizen Kane is great because of how it tells a powerful story of social and financial success, pinned by an empty, unhappy, heart. His financial and social success never fills him, and the public never truly have affection towards him.

Think of it like A Christmas Carol, but without all of the useless feelgood nonsense.

If you need fast movies that can be appreciated by their surface content, look elsewhere than the likes if these kinds of movies. They're slow, and all the important bits are subtextual. They are slow, so as to emphasize to subtext, which gets lost if the pace is too fast.

Godfather will rate poorly with the ADD crowd. So most of todays youth will probably not like the movie. Which is understandable. This is not a movie for Generation Y.

yes it clearly lacks the quality attributes that made fast and the furious 6 a hit.

I love Godfather part 1 and 2. However, its definitely a little dated in some of the scenes that make it a little slow for a modern audience. I bet they could do a modernization and recut some of the scenes for a quicker pace.

There are scenes where the phone will ring, then Sonny will literally get up and walk over to the phone, pick up the phone, say hello and stuff, hang up, and walk back.

I love this movie and the end is one of the best if not the best ever. When Michael's wife walks in and asks him if he killed his brother and he lies to her face and to never ask about his business again gives you the sense that no one is safe not even his own wife and that Michael has no conscience just brilliant.

Goodfellas is my all time mob movie though. It is a much faster pace movie and I think that is why most people that hate the Godfather like Goodfellas better. I’m generation X and see that most people have the attraction span of a gnat.

Lolololol at the peeps in this thread confusing Scarface with The Godfather. Kind of says it all. :hmm:

If you can't grok the million mile difference between those two flicks, that's ok, de gustibus non est disputandum, but you and I probably can't talk movies . . . or life.

Personally, I feel it prudent to like The Godfather because it made me an offer I can't refuse.

Waking up to the bloody, severed head of Sarah Jessica Parker in your bed?

The horror! D:

Like watching paint dry

^^^ One of Ingmar Bergman's most underrated films. The scraping, the sanding, the penetratingly deep preparation! The tragedy of the never-to-be-seen-again undercoat -- so vital yet so buried!

And then, the seemingly unbroken triumph of the bold fuscia topcoat!

It's only when the director delivers that unblinking close-up showing the trembling and microscopically uneven brush strokes revealing the deep pain and uncertainty hidden in Lars, the humble house painter's heart, that we know true heartbreak as laid bare upon a sun room's wall.

This last static close-up of the wall, so mutely evocative of mankind's modern existential dilemma, is perhaps the greatest 47 minutes in cinematic history!

10/10: One of the most colorful black and white films ever!

Godfather holds up well. Scarface felt really dated. Might have been because of the 80's cheesiness.

Those here airily dismissing The Godfather are uncomfortably close to the outright idiots here confusing Scarface with The Godfather.

That's like equating Starship Troopers with Saving Private Ryan because they're both "war movies!" :awe:

I love both movies but I actually have Goodfellas in my collection and could watch it over and over and over. It is that good. Both movies are on my all time favorite list but I think Goodfellas is the one I like best.

Also a Gen-Xer here.

I always love comments that follow the "If you don't like XXXXX you're a horrible person who should be killed" format.

Beer snobs, wine snobs, movie snobs... Snobs of any type are amusing.

Just to add a bit more. . I think the reason the sequel is considered just as good if not better is because you see the stark contrast between Vito and Michael. I talk about values and character development, etc. and I think it is summed up at the end of 2. Would Vito have ordered Fredo dead? What would Vito think of Michael ordering Fredo dead? What have our values become since the initial wedding scene?

That's a good point. Throughout the first film, Vito is the driving force behind the direction of the family. Even the assasination on the other families at the end of the film is part of an overarching plan by Vito. That is, Vito orchestrated the plan by feigning weakness, starting by negotiating an end to the war and allowing the other families to encroach upon their territory. He's smart enough to plan the attack well in advance with Michael so that even though these events happen after his death, they were designed and put into motion by Vito. So the second movie shows the plans and machinations that Michael is able to put into motion entirely on his own.

Yes, it is great in it's own right, but CK is important, historically, because it literally established the techniques of modern film-making: use of deep focus, modern and contemporary theory of mise-en-scene, effective use of various camera angles (there was no low camera angle use before CK, much as there was no front-facing portrait before The Mona Lisa), lighting...everything.

All of this, Orson Wells cooked out of his noggin at the young age of 26 or so.

Brian DePalma is one of the worst directors ever.

That is why Scarface is full of cheese and is an overall shitty movie.
