It will be fast enough for current games. Future games? Of course not. I'm sure games 10 years down the line are going to require much more power.

it'll be good for a year, then you'll want to upgrade the gfx to maintain the same FPS.

games are 18 months behind hardware minimum
a game that you can buy today was started 18-24 months ago with avalible hardware at that time
so you will be fine for some time to come

Lots of people have a cd rom drive and a cdrw. For one, you can do direct copies with 2 cd rom drives. Second, plain old cd rom drives tend to be faster than burners.

Why not just spend the extra money and get a decent 19inch monitor, with all those Dell deals, it makes sense.
There is much of price difference between good cd-rom and lite-on, or toshiba dvd-rom.
256 of ram, what operating system are you planning to use. Here's an Anandtech poll if 256mb of ram is enough the 256mb poll

<< will this computer be fast enough >>

, Yup, plenty fast enough. However, if you can i'd get a 19" monitor, it makes a big difference.

It should do well for the next 6 months. Beyond that is anyone's guess, especially with the likes of Doom3 and Unreal2 looming in the near distance.

Mmmm 19inch monitors . Once you use em...you'll never go back! I can sit so far from the monitor and still see it =]

Everything you listed will last a very long time except your video card. Even though it will last probably 2 to 3 years. Even tnt2 ultra's can pretty much play any game out now at a decent resolution. ex. 800x600.

This may not apply, but one reason not to get a 19"er is that they weight a ton if you happen to do a lot of lanning. Just a thought.

MAIN bottlenecks for todays pc's are HD's, buy the fastest yu can afford (like suzzie 15k cheetah's) and one way to get around it is to get ton's of Memory. The video is alwas a issue for gamers, so ask around.

"athlon xp 1700+"

That chip is pleny fast, but the XP1800+ is only $9 bucks more right now according to pricewatch. One speed-bin up for under ten bucks might give you something to think about.

I'd go with 512MB ram. Alot of newer games really use alot of ram and the loading times get pretty annoying if you're low on ram. 512MB is the "new" sweet spot IMO.

My 19inch NEC is 50 pounds, how heavy is a 17inch? I know my 5 year old NEC 17inch is 59 pounds .

Well, if you're looking to get the best possible mileage out of the computer, you may consider the fact that a bigger monitor, nice as it is, will not look as good as a smaller one at the same resolution. So, you need more video power to drive that higher resolution. So, you'd probably be replacing your vid card a bit sooner than you would've with a 17". Still, the 19" is probably worth it... but it really depends on your budget.

The only thing I would upgrade on that PC is the monitor look into a 19 inch! Check the hotdeals forum I know officemax is always giving fat rebates away and there are other oiptions also!
