Will this processor help speed up the system significantly?

I am currently running a socket 939 AMD 3200+ 64 and due to not having the funds at the moment to build a new system with faster stuff was thinking of dropping in a MD64X2 4400+ processor.

The 4400+ is 2.2 ghz and dual core.

Will I see a noticable improvement in system speed or should I just wait until I can build a newer system?

Thanks for any advice.

It's funny, I'm in the exact same boat.

There are a few things keeping me back from upgrading:
1) Dropping a dual core into a 939 motherboard may realize some performance gains, but it's ultimately not futureproof since 939 is essentially a dead socket.
2) The prices for the 939 duals are insane when compared to their AM2 counterparts. AMD is slashing prices on just about everything they have, but the 939 duals haven't budged an inch.

I'm interested to see what kind of advice you get. Personally, I'm thinking about holding off until AMD announces their next chips. Ditto for ATI, since it looks like R600's going to blow the doors clean off the 8000 cards. While waiting for ATI is my main holdup, if AMD doesn't get their act together, I may end up switching over to Intel for their quad-core in the near future.

Ive played with both the 3200 and the 4400. You should see a real nice improvement. What are the rest of system specs? What do ya do with your pc?

Save some bucks and get a 3800+ and overclock it.

3800+ $89

I upgraded my wifes rig with one of these and did a mild o/c to 2.5ghz on stock volts, and it was a big improvement over the 3200+ she had. It's very snappy and a multi-tasking beast. Except in video encoding and benchmarking, I really can't tell much of a difference between her rig and my C2D running 3.2ghz.

If you have single core cpu then you will notice multitasking improvement but not much of performance gain....I had single core AMD 3500+ A64 (2.2Ghz) to X2 4800+ (2.4Ghz) I don't see much performance gain.

When I upgraded I went from a 3500+ single to my opteron 175. I saw the biggest performance increases in working with file compression otherwise there was little difference. Oh and games played better but I also upgraded my video card at the same time so I can't say for sure that it was all cpu. I wouldn't spend a lot of money on 939 and begin to look towards building a ddr2 based system. My current system memory is going bad and tomorrow the ups should bring my c2d parts so I can upgrade. I considered buying new ram however I couldn't bring myself to spend more money on a dead platform so I opted to upgrade. The opty will move to another system in the house and once corsair replaces my ram it will go into another system as well. My abit will be laid to rest in the spare parts bin.

thats 939 3800+ x2 has dropped some more though. I just WISH it would be 90 dollars, or 70 euro's in Holland and I'd buy one right now. They seem to be really scarce here though. So I figured I might as well sing it out till august/september for the next intel price drops and the barcelona. My 3000+ venice at 2430mgh isn't giving me any trouble so far, and upcoming games like crysis need a complete system overhaul anywayz.

I had an P4 3GHz system and after going to a 4600+ X2 i've noticed a huge improvement. I can now encode dvd's while playing a game and no slowdown. And for saying you see no performance gains, that will be true if the game you're playing does not support SMP. I play mostly Call of Duty 2 that does benefit from dual and i've noticed a big improvement.

The 3800+ X2 should be a nice upgrade on the cheap.

With dual core newer games that will become faster so will multitasking and any encoding and rendering. if its less then $150 upgrade you might as well do it. Any more you might as well save up for a new computer.

I went from a Celeron D 347 to a Core 2 Duo E4300, and the improvement in windows loading times was quite dramatic, not to mention the dramatic improvement in the FPS of Game Test 1 in 3D Mark 2003 . Funnily enough the rest of the game test remain the same., using a 6800 here.

As well the Sims 2 performance increased dramatically, not to mention X3: Reunion FPS was up.
