It's not supperior in an way. It is simply cheaper.

Looking at the Anandtech review, even at lower clocks it was passing or staying very close to the 2600K.

So that lower cost allows more money to be put into a different part of the machine. That makes it a superior product for gamers. Getting a faster GPU for instance with that 100 bucks goes a long way to adding to that as well.

2500k. 90% of what I use my home desktop for is games, and the other 10% is Microsoft Office. I'll put the extra $100 to an SSD or beefier GPU, as other posters have mentioned.

That was what I was thinking, too -- went for overall system balance and weighted towards what I most often use the PC for, and got the 2500K.

well thats what i was going to say also...

If your going to get a K, whats the point in getting the higher one if the multi is unlocked.

Your going to surpass the stock multi on both cpu's so it makes more sense to get the cheaper.

However, i had the fortune to talk to Dr. Who from intel @ a CES afterparty.
I asked him a question regarding the 980X -> 990X -> 995X and why they are all on the same stepping but different numbers.

He told me Binning.

So now we have to assume intel does bin the processors even further down family, and not just the locked vs. unlocked family.

So it might make more sense if your an avid overclocker to get a 2600K, if intel does selective binning.

So putting my faith in Dr. Who.. i think i will probably get the 2600K.

well I forgot to add that in too, there are obviously hobbyists out there who will do it just for overclocking and benching, however I was talking more along the lines of people who are considering a purchase to fulfill a need and are on a limited budget

heck, I'm sure there will several crazy overclocker who get both chips if not several of each just to play with seeing which one will give them the most Hz.

I wish the Asrock Fatality would get released. Maybe midnight will bring more boards

2600k and the same motherboard. I am shooting for 5 on this baby !

I'm aiming for a more pedestrian 4.6 with my Corsair A70 to cool it. I want something that is quietish and quite powerful.

Exactly I remember paying 450 for my quad core so this being only 330 is peanuts and its' way faster than what I'm using.

Or some of use haven't upgraded in years and didn't want to upgrade to an inferior CPU. $100 is peanuts over the course of a couple of years. Heck, it's peanuts over the course of 1 year. I swear some people are making it seem like $1000.

The point of the 2600k is hyperthreading and the larger cache. If you cant take advantage of those then skip it and get the 2500k

I went with the 2500k. I'd love the 2600k, but the most intensive thing I do is play some current gen games. Also another reason I went with the 2500k is because Microcenter didn't offer any motherboard bundle deals for the 2600k. What was puzzling to me is that another guy in the store went with the i7-2600. He was debating on the 2600k, but decided to save $20 and go for the 2600

Would HD video rendering and using PS CS5 at the same time warrant a 2600k or could I get by with a 2500k?

If I am getting one then it is probably the 2500K.

I will only get the 2600K if it proves to really show some amazing shit via streaming my desktop to the internet to see me pwn noobs.

2600k for the HT and extra cache. my distributed computing apps should benefit greatly from the extra threads and cache, and i also have a particular game i play which is very cache and cpu clock limited, so the extra cpu clocks will make a worthwile difference to me there as well

ed: vid editing + CS5 would be a good reason to get the 2600k for the HT, but i'd max your system ram out as well if you can afford both

Does the 2600K OC better than the 2500K? That would be the only reason I´d get the 2600K seeing as I use my rig mainly for gaming. Before you guys tell me I should get the 2500K and put the extra C-note towards vid card, I love to OC... it´s more of a hobby than anything else...

With having a 980x and 12GB DDR3 ram and a ATI 5870 video card is there anything coming out soon with the new line that would be really an upgrade from what I have even?

If you already have 1156/1366 you really should wait for Socket 2011 (socket R) before thinking about upgrading. There are comparable CPU's to the 980x but there isnt going to be any game changing proccessors to surpass yours. For that kind of setup adding a second 5870 is your best upgrade until the next socket.

I went with a 2500, but I'm already considering canceling it and getting a 2600 (or 2600K). I just hate the thought of purchasing something, and maybe a month down the road, I realize that I really should have spent the extra money and purchased the better product.

I doubt it'll be an issue... I mean hell, I'm upgrading from an i7-860 . Although, this upgrade is more about replacing the terrible ASUS motherboard I have more than anything. For some reason, I've always had better luck with cheaper computer components... it's a strange thing .

I'm not in the market, but if I were I would buy the K version just for resale value alone. No one is going to want a non-K variant when it comes time to sell it off.
