Is the controller any different?
Not that I can tell. It feels different, only because it's new and my old controllers are 4+ years old.
Is the controller any different?
Holy shit, this new Xbox is quiet!
I originally had a non hdmi xenon 360, and it would sound like a vacuum cleaner when it was running a disc, and was still loud without a disc. The 360-s is silent even with a disc.
Or perhaps it's been that way for a while, but my original xbox was loud as hell. I'm impressed. I'm not so impressed at the stupid sound it makes whenever you turn it on and eject the tray, but that's just nitpicking.
Hey Pat, do you have your new 360 vertical or horizontal? I have mine vertical ('cause it looks cool ) and the CD spinning is pretty loud. it vibrates the plastic in an annoying way. Granted, I install my games, so the CD doesn't end up spinning at all during gameplay...
I have mine horizontal. The only reason is that its major intake is on the right side of the console (or bottom if vertical), and I didn't want to leave anything to chance.
Perhaps my 360 S isn't quite as quiet as I make it, but I seriously went from a vacuum cleaner to near silence.
I thought I heard on a podcast that the new controllers have the 16-direction d-pad from the limited edition green controllers that were only available in Europe, but I can't find any definitive info.

No difference in the D-pad? I thought I heard on one of the joystiq podcasts that the d-pad was similar to the limited release controller they had in europe a few years ago. Maybe I mis-heard...
edit: ah, found it from almost 2 years ago: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/microsoft-confirms-revised-360-d-pad
Well bleh. I'm really not liking MS right now. I ordered from their online store, and it ended up saying it was delayed, so I canceled it and ordered from Best Buy, meanwhile emailing MS to cancel my order with them. Next morning they email saying they can't because it has shipped already. As had Best Buy's order, of course. So now I have 2 new 360's en route to my house.
Luckily my friend said he would buy the extra from me for what I paid for it, so no harm no foul I guess.
And OT, but I am ticked at MS right now. I tried to buy points last night and it kept saying there was a problem with my card and it wouldn't give me the points. I tried on xbox.com a few minutes ago, and it was still giving errors. My balance is still 140 points. So I go and check my bank account to see if anything was out of place and I see that MS has charged me for 1600 points 6 times over. Now I know they say no refunds on points, but if I don't get my money back I am going to be pissed. I don't have a need for 9600 points...
I have mine horizontal also, and it's ridiculously quiet. I was installing games to the HD last night and I had no idea when it was actually done because I couldn't hear the drive.
The major intake is on the bottom (if it's vertical)? That's just... poor design isn't it?
GAAAAAAH, I hate those fucking touch senstive buttons on the new 360. Twice today my dog magically finds the EXACT spot for the disc tray and opens it with her nose.
Who was the fucktard who designed it? Ugh.
put the 360 on shelf higher up?
It's the exhaust. Not the the intake.
No way. The thing is ugly as sin and looks ghetto with it's "blinged" out look. I'll stick to my Jasper system 'till it breaks, thank you very much.
Got the xbox 360S on saturday, played it a whole 3 times this week, yesterday got home and the disc drive would not open. Had to manually eject the disc with a paper clip, unplugged the machine, powered off several times, disc drive still won't open or recognize disc's. I had mine setup Horizontal.
Taking it back and getting a ps3 today after work, microsoft has pissed in my cereal for the last time.
