Holy shit, this new Xbox is quiet!

I originally had a non hdmi xenon 360, and it would sound like a vacuum cleaner when it was running a disc, and was still loud without a disc. The 360-s is silent even with a disc.

Or perhaps it's been that way for a while, but my original xbox was loud as hell. I'm impressed. I'm not so impressed at the stupid sound it makes whenever you turn it on and eject the tray, but that's just nitpicking.

hmm, good observation. I have never seen/heard the slim version in person, but definitely agree the original 360 (jasper in my case) is surprisingly loud. Being brand new and all, still clearly audible over my two computers near the desk.

Good thing is I probably won't turn it on unless I am gaming on it.. Still, much louder than I thought it would have been. I guess they could get away with it if it was sitting afar next to the TV. Mine is sitting on top of the desk, about 3-4 feet away from me.

I bought one Saturday at BBY to replace my launch Pro which died about a year ago.

I like the new dashboard and the unit was relatively quiet compared to my old one. Wireless and a bigger drive is what I was mostly waiting for. It makes it so much more competitive with the PS3 IMHO. The drive was making a bit more noise than I had hoped...

Anyways, fired it up yesterday to play some Forza and got a disc read error when loading a map..and never came back to life..drive died in less than 10 hours of use. It would spin but not read any disc. Unfortunately, no one has a replacement right now in my area so I just got a refund and will have to wait it out.

My GF asked me if this Xbox was a piece that was bound to break like my last one. She's having a good laugh now

Hey Pat, do you have your new 360 vertical or horizontal? I have mine vertical ('cause it looks cool ) and the CD spinning is pretty loud. it vibrates the plastic in an annoying way. Granted, I install my games, so the CD doesn't end up spinning at all during gameplay...

I have mine horizontal. The only reason is that its major intake is on the right side of the console (or bottom if vertical), and I didn't want to leave anything to chance.

Perhaps my 360 S isn't quite as quiet as I make it, but I seriously went from a vacuum cleaner to near silence.

I have mine horizontal also, and it's ridiculously quiet. I was installing games to the HD last night and I had no idea when it was actually done because I couldn't hear the drive.

I thought I heard on a podcast that the new controllers have the 16-direction d-pad from the limited edition green controllers that were only available in Europe, but I can't find any definitive info.

Only way to test would be a fighting game, correct? Maybe I can download a trial game to try it out.

Well bleh. I'm really not liking MS right now. I ordered from their online store, and it ended up saying it was delayed, so I canceled it and ordered from Best Buy, meanwhile emailing MS to cancel my order with them. Next morning they email saying they can't because it has shipped already. As had Best Buy's order, of course. So now I have 2 new 360's en route to my house.

Luckily my friend said he would buy the extra from me for what I paid for it, so no harm no foul I guess.

And OT, but I am ticked at MS right now. I tried to buy points last night and it kept saying there was a problem with my card and it wouldn't give me the points. I tried on xbox.com a few minutes ago, and it was still giving errors. My balance is still 140 points. So I go and check my bank account to see if anything was out of place and I see that MS has charged me for 1600 points 6 times over. Now I know they say no refunds on points, but if I don't get my money back I am going to be pissed. I don't have a need for 9600 points...

I went in to trade in my spring '06 360 today at Gamestop for a Slim. They were out of stock and weren't optimistic about getting any in in the near future. After unplugging my old system (with component/optical connections), I was not crazy about the idea of putting it back in place, which would have necessitated a lot of digging around the dusty mess inside my HT cabinet (obviously a much bigger hassle than plugging a single HDMI cable into my receiver).

The clerk/manager was nice enough to let me get the full promotional trade credit on a $250 Elite Halo 3 ODST/Forza 3 bundle (the 120GB drive is plenty for me, and I use a wired ethernet connection to my system, so it's nearly as good as a Slim). I also got $25 trade-in credit for the copy of Forza 3 that came with my Elite. The upshot was that once all my trade-in credits were totaled, I paid only $120 out of pocket for the upgrade, not including the trade-in value I will still get for my old 20GB drive. Not too shabby! On balance, for my needs, I think this was a better deal than the Slim would have been, so I'm very pleased.

EDIT: I brought my 20GB drive in today and got $30 trade value. They also let me buy a used HD transfer cable, then return it for cash. After all the trade credits are counted, this whole exchange cost me less than $100 - great deal!

No difference in the D-pad? I thought I heard on one of the joystiq podcasts that the d-pad was similar to the limited release controller they had in europe a few years ago. Maybe I mis-heard...

edit: ah, found it from almost 2 years ago: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/microsoft-confirms-revised-360-d-pad

The d-pad appears to have a slightly shorter throw... meaning that it doesn't move as much when you press the dpad.

As for the 16-way part, I have no idea how I'd confirm that.

If RROD #2 kicks in after this July. (3 year RROD warranty expiring), and if it's not so easily fixable.

dispute them with your CC. MS multy charged me on that shit for the same reason you described and Amex handled it for me

GAAAAAAH, I hate those fucking touch senstive buttons on the new 360. Twice today my dog magically finds the EXACT spot for the disc tray and opens it with her nose.

Who was the fucktard who designed it? Ugh.

Yeah, I can't hear mine over the ambient noise in my living room. Only if I stick my head right down next to it.

The exception is running Alan Wake off of the disk. For some reason, that generates a LOUD buzzing noise but that was the same on my Jasper 360 too.

put the 360 on shelf higher up?

Yea, I could, but that requires a massive reorganizing of my components to accomplish. I will probably eventually do that, but it's still a pain.

It's the exhaust. Not the the intake.

Yea, I misspoke earlier. When horizontal, the left side is intake, the right side is exhaust.

Still, heat tends to rise, so when vertical, heat starts coming from the top.

Got the xbox 360S on saturday, played it a whole 3 times this week, yesterday got home and the disc drive would not open. Had to manually eject the disc with a paper clip, unplugged the machine, powered off several times, disc drive still won't open or recognize disc's. I had mine setup Horizontal.

Taking it back and getting a ps3 today after work, microsoft has pissed in my cereal for the last time.

No way. The thing is ugly as sin and looks ghetto with it's "blinged" out look. I'll stick to my Jasper system 'till it breaks, thank you very much.

<blink> What, really? It's black with minor chrome highlights. There's nothing bling about it. I put it in my entertainment cabinet and I can't even see it.

Mine was horizontal too when it died, but my tray would also open/close.

Took me a dozen phone calls and a 45 mile drive to get a replacement this weekend and with the way that thing vibrates when reading I just get the sinking feeling that my new unit is going to die soon as well.
