Will You Buy MS Vista

Just curious...my PC will be 3 years-old when Vista comes out towards the end of this year and I'm debating whether or not to replace it with a new PC running Vista. Most people say don't do it...anything brand new from MS always has bugs in it...what do you guys think?

Where is the poll ?
And no, not only I won't be buying Vista, I won't buy any MS products anymore, since I have migrated to Linux a while back and it only get's better after that

No... but I will probably obtain a free copy at some point due to my line of work. I love business perks.

Well I certainly won't buy it when it comes out. But maybe my school library will have it available with a volume licensing key like they did when Windows XP came out.

Sorry about that...was gonna do a poll but I guess I goofed! I've thought about going with Linux, but I worry about compatibility issues...will it find my printer, modem, sound card, etc...it's too bad MS has so much of the market...if there were more Linux systems out there the compatibility thing wouldn't even be an issue.

Well, do your homework very good and you will end up with a machine with everything supported out of the box as long as you keep thinking that you can pick random hardware and hope to get them to work in any non MS OS you will always be stuck with MS.

I'll give you a perfect example, I sold my gaming A 64 rig and wanted to buy a nice laptop that will be used as my main system, did a little bit of research and purchased an R50e Thinkpad 1842-SVU , everything in there is % 100 Linux compatible and in some cases works better than in windows. I don't have a single piece of hardware that is having problems running in Linux and that is including my external peripherals.

If you do your hardware homework you will be very satesfied with the results trust me.

Thanks a lot for that advice...if I decide to switch over to Linux, I'll definitely keep that in mind before I do so. Unfortunately, I've already bought all the hardware I need right now and at this point in time I'm not gonna go out and buy new stuff just so it's compatible with Linux. When I replace my entire system this fall, though, I'd be willing to do it.

Thanks again...

Well you know that most hardware ends up working without an issue most of the time, post your specs please.

P4 2.4 Ghz Processor
WD 80GB ATA-100 HD
HP LaserJet 1012 Printer
Westell Wirespeed DSL Modem
Linksys BEFSR41 DSL Router
Samsung CD-RW
Samsung DVD-RW
MSI 845E Max Motherboard
nVidia GE Force 4 Video Card (64MB)
Realtek AC97 Sound
Generic RAM 512MB

Is this enough info? I've heard Ubuntu is the version that's compatible with more HW than any other?

I'll be quite curious to try it out. Don't know where I'll be working then, but maybe it'll be somewhere that upgrades quickly. I'd prefer to be working with something else but chances are it will be windows so that's what I'm hoping for.

Talking about Linux and compatability, I have an odd problem with Ubuntu which my kids like so I'm using. I have 4 systems. Three of them have no problem with Linux of any flavor....but one, an A64 3200+ has never successfully had Linux installed on it and I have newer hardware on other systems. It has:

A64 3200+
ATI X800XL
2X 250GB Seagate SATA
Asus A8N-E
Creative Audigy 2 NX USB Sound
NEC Burner
Sony CD-ROM

Thant's it but for some reason, no Linux variation has ever successfully installed and most give a reason of corrupt video setting which I don't think actually is the problem because I've tried every conceivable setting. As mentioned, I also have a 7800 nVidia and now an 1800 ATI card which have no problem with Ubuntu..........weird.......

LOL, I had an almost exact setup as that A64 setup of yours, and absolutely no go with Ubuntu, but Fedorea Core 4 installed without a hitch so FC is your best bet on such a setup IMHO.
To add to that I was never able to sucessfully install Ubunut on any system of whatever variation, a long time ago I was biased for Ubuntu after trying it out on my friend's system, then after failing too many times on many different systems, I gave Fedora Core (FC 3 Beta back then, FC 4 ATM) and let me tell you life is good

I'm hoping I'll have saved up enough for the laptop I want by the time it is released, so it might be
a worthwhile consideration by then.

Above I was talking how Ubuntu was a no go on that setup not FC silly.

Ofcourse FC 4 is available, and long time ago, where have you been ? FC 4.
Also FC 5 is in Beta testing, if you want to give that a shot too Beta Link

Lately the FC team has been doing some nice work, especially on the YUM app manager, a lot of improvements so far.

I was saying that I had tried Fedora Core 3 also but it would not install so I gave up on it so I had not followed Fedora after that. Debian is my fav. on the system I use most. Thanks for the links, I give it a try!

I may perhaps, but I should get it free (well not technically free, maybe a huge discount) since I'm part of the MS Action Pack program. I should get it shortly after it comes out this year (if they do not delay it another year...)

The Linuxator,
I've used a few Linux distro's before but I am no pro with them. I'm mostly used to Windows but I'd love to be able to completely wipe out Windows if I knew I could easily convert. Currently I'm running two Domain controllers/DNS controllers on a Win Server 2003 and Win 2000 Server box. Those are the main things I'm concerned about. Plus, here at home I have my sister that uses the computer(s) (but mostly her laptop), my parents that have a roaming profile account, and some other people that need to login. I realize that I can setup my webserver in Apache and my FTP in another daemon, it's just it's hard to find time to learn all that with college classes and little time.

Well I had some difficulty at first, but then after dual booting WinXP Pro & FC 4 for a couple of months I found myself logging in to XP less and less everyday untill one day once I stopped enjoying playing games, I found no reason why I should bother with XP anymore and made the full and complete migration to Linux and I never looked back again

It just feels so good and no I am not exagerating when I tell you that it just feels like shear joy when I sit down and work on my FC 4 system, everything just works as I want it to, and if not I just go in and make it work like I want it to .
Things are smooth, I pick the theme that I like , I use an app out of the plathora of apps I have available to me via YUM or whatever else, I don't worry about viruses spyware,... WMF....etc it just feels great.
And the picture quality is just incomparable to windows, and for those little apps that I might need windows for, I have WINE ready for action.

I don't know, Linux seemed as thee logical thing to use after I stopped gaming, it just does, hope one day you'll have enough time on your hand and do what I did and feel how good it is to do such a thing.

Snap of my FC 4 Setup.

Despite the retarded name "Vista," I'll probably buy a professional-oriented flavor of "Windows 2007" when it comes out, yeah. Hey, I got to bring clarity to my world somehow

What is that, 800x600? Man, how can you live with such a low rez? I'd feel claustrophobic.
