The wifi tether mod on my phone turns it into a wifi router that anything with wifi can connect to.
Ah, gotcha. Guess I was confusing myself for some reason.

It seemed quite useless for my needs.
Michael Bolton: That's the worst idea I've ever heard in my life, Tom.
Samir: Yes, this is horrible, this idea.
Glad to see the apple forum isn't just a bunch of fanboys. I'm glad you see this ipad for what it is. Useless. It was best described by a previous poster " a big iPod touch."
Nope. Grandmas often love Flash. Stupid Flash videos. Stupid Flash websites and gaming. Etc. Yes, they're stupid sites often, but nonetheless they are quite popular, esp. amongst the n00b crowd.I've got a pants load of Apple Stock, and have made some mad $ on it, but I have no illusions.
A couple of things everyone keeps forgetting though:
Set Grandma up with a WiFi router or buy her one with 3G and they're gonna love it.
HTML5 isn't even an official standard yet. So it's definitely not gonna be ubiquitous in the near future... unless you think an optimistic 2015 for common HTML5 implementation is the "near future".HTML 5 will make flash irrelevant in the near future, I use my non-flash phone extensively, it really doesn't matter to me... If I really need to watch the Magical Trevor video, I'll use my desktop or notebook.

Apple is very likely going to a cloud based storage of content, making the RAM limitations a non issue.

I'm gonna pick one up. At $500, it's cheap enough that you can buy one out of curiosity. I'm hoping for a decent pdf reader that will let me read articles and text books while kicking back on the couch, without having to sit at a computer, or balance a laptop/ netbook on my lap.
So like I've said before, as much as I hate Flash e-cards, YOUR hating Flash is not a good reason for grandma to give it up.i'm sure grandma would take to some of the simpler iphone app games already out rather quick. mostly grandma forwards emails and sends ecards.
ecards need to die, so no flash is doing world a service there.
yea guess what grandma did? she gave spammers all our names and emails in one fell swoop!! yay!!

You're perfectly justified in getting an iPad to use the internet without Flash. However, you are not grandma. Or at least I hope you're not a grandma. That would have me confused...
Absolutely yes!
.........
The price is surprisingly low especially considering the superior quality and resale value of apple hardware; and the software and UI is the best available . The monthly fee for unlimited internet on the iPad is half the price for netbooks and notebooks with 3G. The fact that you do not need to sign a two year contract and that you can activate and deactivate month by month right from the iPad itself is icing on the cake; so convenient, and something unique to the iPad.

The iPad will revolutionize personal computing IMHO just as the iphone transformed the mobile phone business.

The missing hardware features that most geeks are complaining about:, USB, SD, camera, HDMI etc, are not going to be missed by the great majority of consumers. Most everyone already has a camera in his phone, and those who really need SD and USB can purchase the respective high quality dongles from Apple for a reasonable price.
The missing software features, Flash and multitasking, on the other hand will be missed by more buyers than the missing hardware features, I think. I suspect that multitasking in some form will be coming in a few months with the iphone OS 4.0 update. As for Flash I doubt it will come to the iphone or iPad anytime soon. I personally don't miss it and neither do the 75 million iphone and ipod touch users.
At the moment, I rather have an HP Slate.
