Will Youtube ever improve their video quality?

After playing around on stage6.com and seeing how much better the quality of the videos are there, I'm wondering if Youtube is ever going to upgrade their video quality? Obviously nobody can compete with the amount of content they have, but watching stuff there can be painful due to the quality.

EDIT: Wait, doesn't Google own YouTube now, anyways? If so, then sure, I imagine we'll have higher quality videos on the future.

YouTube doubled their server capacity in the last four months. The problem here is their perpetual upgrading keeps on going to higher stream counts instead of higher resolution. Once YouTube stops it's explosive growth, further upgrades will go to improving resolution. The simple issue is they just can't keep up and offer higher bandwidth at the same time. That will change once they reach user saturation, but who knows how long that will take.

They get plenty of traffic as is with their low quality lower bandwidth videos.

Maybe they'll start a subscription service and that'll be one of the perks, kind of like Anandtech's subscription service some time ago - pay some money, and in return get faster service with no ads.

Why?

It's partially in the uploader's error that the movies are crap quality. I've seen some that are crystal. You can't make high-quality come from low-quality vids.

I'd imaging consolidating the Youtube and Google Video brands is a priority before improvements. Don't hold your breath through, I'm still waiting for the AIM Google Talk interoperability that was announced over a year ago.

I have not seen anything of HQ on youtube. Yes, some things encode better when converted to FLV (non-action stuff mostly), but still, it's not great IMO. stage6 is awesome in quality. Too bad it is YADamnPluginToInstall.

I see Stage6 has a lot of high quality videos, music and otherwise, with no drm, I am surprised the RIAA, MPAA, or other like organizations haven't cracked down on them yet.

The first featured video on the main page. Not bad at all. The red text is a little fuzzy... but that's because it's red text in motion graphics.

Yes, it's obviously not what some videophiles would consider crystal, but I would be satisfied watching a TV show or something at that quality.
