William Shakespeare: The Complete Works

FROM OUR EDITORS
Here is every word ever written by the immortal Bard?the histories, tragedies, comedies, and sonnets?in a facsimile of the definitive Shakespeare Head edition published originally in Oxford, England. Enjoy the playwright's great comedies, The Merchant of Venice, Much Ado About Nothing, and As You Like It; his classic tragedies Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth; and dozens of other works that define Shakespeare as the supreme interpreter of both the frailties and potentialities of the human condition. The plays are arranged in chronological order of their completion, revealing the evolution of Shakespeare's genius, with an accompanying glossary. (Barnes & Noble) 1,263pp.

SYNOPSIS
Widely hailed on its first publication in 1951, the Complete Works of William Shakespeare edited by Professor Peter Alexander has long been established as one of the most authoritative editions of Shakespeares works. This updated edition includes a brief biography of Shakespeare by Germaine Greer and an introduction to his theater by Anthony Burgess; new introductions to the plays and poems written by a team from Glasgow University; an essay on the significance of the Alexander text; and a glossary with 2,500 words and phrases.

If this is the version I think it is, I'd avoid it. You're better off picking up an easier to read (larger print, better formatting of the book) version, which will also probably have useful commentary and criticism. If you just need a handy reference, I suppose it will suit you fine.

Well is this that version you don't like or not? The description says it has everything you say it doesn't (ie., good formatting and useful commentary). To be helpful, please consider being more definitive with your comments and maybe offer an alternative title.

I purchased this collection when it first came out and paid much more than this for it. Great price and definitely worth having if you enjoy Shakespeare. The font size on the text may be a bit small for some but nothing a pair of reading glasses won't take care of. Highly recommend this for the literature lovers out there.

This version is lacking both footnotes and line numbers.

Exactly. It is useful for a quick, condensed Shakespeare reference, but it is not a good resource for actually reading and learning about the works.

Most of Shakespeare's works are probably on the Gutenberg Project site for those of you who like eBooks or reading on PDAs.

Never heard of the author. Does Anandtech have a review of this Shakespeare guy?
