Sometimes I have to wonder about the collective intelligence of ATOT. Nevermind, strike that, I don't have to wonder. It's repeatedly proven to be near zero.
As Waggy correctly pointed out, W-S was NOT showing respect nor were they making any sort of political statement. They bought fifty million dollars of free publicity and a ton of good will for the price of the 10 seconds it took each outlet to remove 2 pressure cookers from the shelf. It's a BRILLIANT marketing move, the country is talking about Williams-Sonoma and it doesn't matter that 99.9999999999% of those people missed the point. Some are saying W-S is wonderfully compassionate and the even more ignorant are saying that W-S is a bunch of knee-jerk reactionaries. And W-S loves it no matter what they're saying.

If Williams and Sonoma wasn't really pulling in much $ for the pressure cookers, these events might have just spurred some execs to look at that line item and figure that they could try using that space to sell something else. I can't imagine them being a huge money maker.
