i have original movie and although i liked jdepps version.... the original had that magic..... i do like how they changed the kid that loved tv to loving video games; you know make it current...

Sorta. The book is called Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The original movie took a few too many liberties with the story and Roald Dahl's family didn't allow the movie to use that name. The new movie is faithful to the book and is, thus, allowed to use the name of the book.

would have to say both are good in their respective rights.

i agree, the original has a certain magic to it, possibly cause i saw it when i was small.
also the songs were better.

but i must say i like the overall story of the newer version.

in the original, charlie fails too - remember, he and his grandpa floating up the tube? i was always disappointed about that part of the movie. that's one thing i like about the new movie.

johnny depp is just awesome. and the background they give you on willy wonka is just great.

That was the big change in the original--the main reason why they had to change the name.

I also agree w/bdon, wonkas back story was a great change. I liked the music in the orginal better but maybe because it was during "my time". The new loompa performances are entertaining and updated to a 2000 flavor but im an old schooler...
