Question Win 10 BootMgr file not found

Hi All,
For the first time in 20 years, I took my computer to someone else after experiencing a Hibernation loop. After trying for 2 hours to find the solution, he finally replaced Win 7 with Win 10. Now, Win 10 wants to update to the latest version, but it couldn't do it. The cause is related to an error message that I cannot find anywhere on the internet: BootMgr file not found. ("BootMgr is missing" is what shows up when I search.)

Has anyone else ever experienced this exact message? I have had no problems booting up; just the issue with the Win 10 update. The tech guy who put Win 10 on my machine didn't give me any install media, so I haven't been able to try some fixes that involve fixing the system with Installation media.

I'm guessing that I have the Win 7 BootMgr, but I don't know how to confirm that. Anyone have ideas about this?

Do you have the Windows 10 install media? (dvd or USB) if so boot from it and when prompted click the repair option you can download a Windows 10 ISO from MS and create a bootable USB with it if you don't already have the media.

No, I don't have the install media. I forgot to ask about it while he was working on my rig. And I wanted to get out of there after several hours... I'll download the ISO. Thanks for the suggestion!

How many drives are in the system ?

Here are useful steps to repair the bootmgr . They are posted for Windows 7 but apply equally when the issue arises in Windows 10.

Hi deustroop, I have 4 drives in the system. Thanks for the link. Yesterday I downloaded Win 10 Installation media and installed on a USB drive, but the option to fix didn't do anything.

Since my computer continues to work properly, I've let it slide for about a week, but I know that I can't wait for a major issue. I'm ready to re-build now (or actually build a Win10 version for the first time).

Ok, I'll take you at your word that to reinstall windows 10 is a good next step. So save your data to one of your non boot drives or elsewhere if convenient. Then prepare install media as advised above and install windows on the intended boot drive.When given the opportunity, delete all previous partitions on the disk, just select the resulting empty space , and click "next".

The thing you must avoid is having any other drive attached during the installation except for the target drive. I suggest that is the error of the " someone else" who installed windows . If there are more than one drive attached, the windows installer will often distribute install file across two of the drives, in your case, "losing" BM for the purposes of the update installer.

Actually, I meant that the "fix" or repair option on the Win 10 Install media didn't work. So now I'm going to use the process that you recommended to build or re-build the BootMgr from the command line.
