Yes that is one of the issues surrounding the upgrade. I used the repair function to restore the aps that it rendered inoperable by the process.

The repair option did not work for Perfect Disk 14 - could not do offline optimization. It also caused instances of "Video TDR Failure."

Which apps were affected? I haven't had anything fail to work yet that I've noticed.

And I guess I don't see why it would need permission to compact its own binaries. If it causes trouble then it was poor planning on their part, and it really seems dumb to compact anything unless you're running a really tiny drive where space is at a premium.

Today I ran into a really serious glitch. Apparently, this upgrade also involves Microsoft compacting all OS binaries to save disk space. That should not have been done without permission. It rendered several apps inoperable until I figured out how to reverse that compacting operation. To do that, you must run CMD as Admin, and add the following command to C:\Windows/System32:

compact /compactOs:never

It takes some time, but it works. It uncompacted 13,658 files in 9187 directories. Now the system and apps run normally.

Microsoft should have asked permission or at least given an advisory.
Were you low on disk space by any chance?

In other news, for those not succumbing to the Microsoft kool-aid, Linux Mint 17.3 beta Cinnamon just came out. Installed it on a fresh SSD, on my Q9300 rig w/8GB and R7 250X 2GB video. It's really slick! Who needs Windows...

Come on Larry, you've been here a long time to know this is not allowed.

Why bother responding with this nonsense in a thread about the Windows 10 fall update?

Right, it is so smooth on AMD graphics, if I didn't know better.

You know, MS is st least listening to its users with windows 10

And even Linus hates Linux desktop

Had Win10 10240 here and even some odd, own tweaks to the OS, like my Windown/Installer folder on another HD with hardlink.

The update (from media creation tool) took about 30mins and was surprisingly without any problems. If there was changes in customization etc. then they were minor, so minor I can't even recall.

I really didn't experience any problems whatsoever even if it seemed like a total reinstall of the OS.

I use the portable versions of CPUZ and HWMonitor. It left them alone. The only things broken were 8gagetpack and OldCalculater. I had to uninstall/reinstall them to get them working.

It did remove any registry tweaks as well, such as the analog clock and a couple others, but I fully expected that. And it reset some privacy settings, expected that too.

Mine was more then that, issue with Windows Update on one printer Canon driver for Win10, ie kept failing to install the driver update after the upgrade(Device Manager had no issues with it), it removed my official Win10 AMD 280x video card driver and replaced it with an older version, removed "CPU-Z" (not a big deal) , removed part of my third party printing software so I had to install part of it from the DVD software disc, also removed "Hardware Monitor", Win10 never said anything about touching last two before upgrade.

Win10 enabled fast startup by default after upgrade as well, yes things I can fix myself after but some of these should of been left alone.

I've a couple of other stuff missing(my shortcut menu tiles for those not there so I don't know what is missing until I figure it out).

I have mine arranged A to Z,some gaps in my tiles so know some of my tile shortcut programs have gone.

Actually, I use CPUz about every other week, just to check on things... but it shouldn't matter whether I use it once a year or once an hour... Mem is correct... an update that is breaking things, uninstalling things, is unconscionable.

Does anyone have Win10 Enterprise? I read that the media creation tool will not work to upgrade that version. I've checked several times and the update isn't appearing in Windows Update. Do I just wait? Has anyone gotten to update from windows update running Win 10 Enterprise?

yeah, now going forward, every time there is a new major update, I'll be wondering if it will uninstall anything... which is annoying.

Fall update apparently completely borked my install rendering it un-bootable! Admittedly I'm assuming thats what did it but it does seem like a rather large coincidence that the problem cropped up immediately after the upgrade installed itself.

Back to Windows 7 for awhile for me. Got the free upgrade license so now theres no rush.

I've discovered that the fall update has allowed my vitalsource bookshelf software to run correctly and allowed me to update it to the current version. The original 10 would only work with the older software and every time I tried to update it I would lose my textbooks.

Enterprise plays by different rules entirely, and you cannot use the Media Creation Tool for Enterprise versions. The latest ISO for Enterprise should be available by logging into the VLSC website.

VL is just trying to drive up his post count again with useless blather.

Not really. I was just really enthusiastic about the new release, I just installed it, and it gives a user experience much like, or even better than, Windows 7. (IMHO the best version of Windows so far.)

And I thought that this was an enthusiast forum. Didn't realize that criticizing Win10 and suggesting an alternative, was disallowed on here. *Shrug*

Regarding the disk compaction, that's very useful on windows tablet. This method does away with having a separate wimboot partition and not being able to compress new updates without regenerating the wimboot image.

Enterprise wasn't updating for me, and the latest iso from their website wasn't installing properly either, so I just used the iso from the website to update my existing version. It worked fine.

My laptop has the Home version and it updated without any noticeable issue.

Yeah. First, it's CPU-Z on your home computer. Next, it will be the medical records billing program, down at the hospital. Well, at least, I hope not, but with MS, and how draconian Win10 has been, who knows. If this is the new face of MS, I don't really like it. They used to be a sort of benign dictator, towards their customers, but now...?

And yes, I keep CPU-Z installed on most of my Win7 boxes, and sometimes keep it running in the background. (Or CoreTemp.)
