So if I download the software now and install it later will it want to charge me for it after July 29, 2016? I am only using Win 10 on one computer for my daughter because of the parental controls that don't seem to work on the version that is on her computer. I have several computers I may have to install it on and then roll back. How do you get the install codes in Win 10 so you can install it later after Win 7 have reached end of life. I like 7 better but at some point I will be forced to 10. I use media center a lot.

There are no keys for 10 like in previous OS's. You have to successfully upgrade your current 7 or higher install to 10 before tomorrow and let it activate so that the hardware key is registered with MS. After that initial activation you can clean install it later on without any key and it will automatically activate itself on the same hardware.

Besides MS has given everyone an entire year to decide on whether or not to upgrade for free so why would you wait until the last minute to do it?

Well because I am happy with 7 but don't want to pay $119 for each of my computers which would add up to about $1000. I am not going to upgrade till I have to but don't want to pay when I do. That is why.

Upgrade now, roll back. Each machine will have a digital entitlement for Windows 10 as long as the motherboard is in operation. You can install clean Win 10 on any machine that was upgraded for free, forever. The key is to get it activated before Friday night.

You could also use just one "Win-to-Go" installation of Win10 on a 32 Gb or larger USB thumb drive, or any type of USB external drive. Just go to each machine and first copy down or print out on paper the 25 character Win7 product code, then re-boot (with internet connection unplugged or disabled) using the thumb drive, change the activation code to the unique Win7 25 character code for each particular machine. Connect to the internet again & double-check that Win 10 is activated. Shut down, unplug the USB thumb drive, and go to the next machine; repeat.
At your convenience at some later point in time, re-install Win10 using a standard hard drive or SSD boot drive.
No guarantees, but: it should work to satisfy the MS registration server for future Win10 activation rights.

I started the upgrade with 14 hours left on the clock, but it was a clean Win7 install (legit w/ key on case) so it had 240 updates as well. I thought it was successful because it reached 99% and stayed there. Shutdown had the "install updates" option so I thought all was well and went to bed while it applied.

Come morning it was still Win7 and the Win10 update will no longer work.... am I humped?

Just do a clean install of win 10 via iso using your win 7 key.
If it still works now, is anyone's guess... so far, it seems they still allow it.

The Win7 key didn't work during the Win10 install wizard, but with a few desperate clicks to said wizard it started downloading again from scratch instead of saying NO. Here's hoping it finishes once the download is done (third time too... yeesh!)

Edit: Nope. Finished download and it asked for the key again. Win7pro key failed again. Looks like I missed the window by a few hours. Tried to contact a live agent but none came on in a couple hours.

You are installing the correct win 10 version right, and you didn't accidentally get the win 10 home version? Reading around, it is still being allowed to activate, so while the "deadline" has past, it don't look like it is a hard deadline yet, they are letting people still activate.

I find 10 to be far superior to any previous MS OS so why wouldn't you want to use it?

Free upgrade is over but there is still a way to upgrade for free.
Forgot to upgrade one of my barely used laptops so searched and found this loophole. not sure how long it will last.

Will try this when I get home in a few days
Already posted in this thread...not sure how you missed it.

For what it is worth, free upgrade is NOT over. You can still use win 7/8 keys and so far, it is still activating from reading around.

This is not completely true. I had a hard drive failure in late July and got the new drive in from Dell two days before time expired. I tried for two days to patch and download the windows 10 image (I previously had it on this laptop), but it wouldn't download and gave me bogus errors. I got busy with life and now I'm not eligible for the windows 10 upgrade it says. Same motherboard, same everything except for the failed hard drive. Trying to figure out how to get Windows 10 back on here since it wouldn't download but yet, I previously had it before my hard drive died.

i can also +1 slag's comment.
The hard drive needs to be the same drive which u installed windows 10 on, otherwise it will fail activation.

This happened to a cousin of mine.
We tried to do a clean / fresh install on a SSD, and it would not activate.
Had to call microsoft, and gave them the old key to his windows 7.
They were kind enough to give him a new activation key once we explained we replaced the hard drive to an SSD.

Just a note, last night, I upgraded two Asus laptops that had Windows 8.1 w/Bing on them, directly to the Windows 10 1607 Anniv. edition update. They showed activated, with "digital license".

Hey, any update on this? Is MS still allowing Win7 holdouts to "upgrade" to Win10 and activate with a Win7 key?

I've got a potential re-format coming up in a few days, it's a Win7 64-bit rig that's five years old. Was wanting to try to push them to Win10, not the least reason that it's much faster to install Win10 and just punch in the Win7 key to activate.

Or, I can just do what's necessary to install Win7 64-bit fresh on an SSD, and then potentially upgrade from there to Win10.

Person has some kind of ransomware on their system, so I didn't want to directly upgrade the current Win7 install to Win10. Plus, it would be the ideal time to put in an SSD for them.
