In case anyone wants to buy a Microsoft license when it goes back on sale, I bought a 2 year license for Bitdefender from PC World's storefront (the one in the OP), and I paid via Paypal. I got my license immediately, and it activated with no issues. It was a much smoother process than when I placed an order on Kinguin.

If anyone else is interested in a Bitdefender subscription, they have a 2 year license / 15 devices Family pack for $29.99, which is about a low as it goes.

At checkout there are also options to add a DVD for $7, and/or to keep your OS available online for 2 more years for $4.
It's really not needed though.

A person can always download the latest Windows 10 build from Microsoft, and they email the license code to you, so as long as you save that email you are fine.

I created separate folders in my email decades ago where I store my license keys, e.g. Windows 10 license, Norton Security, Last Pass, etc. That way you always have them and know exactly where they are.

I do that for a lot of things, but sometimes I want a disc for times I'm off-grid or only have dial-up.

Use Microsoft's Media Creation Tool to download the disc ISO and burn it yourself, or use the Media Creation Tool to create a bootable USB installer drive.

Understandable as everyone has different needs and uses.

On the flip side, if someone already has a DVD burner or USB thumb drive, they could create their own for free at Microsoft's site for future use. I'm cheap, so for me that $7 extra for a disc is kicking up my cheapness level.

I think you can install it without the licenses. It will have a watermark stating that it's unregistered, but you can keep checking back for the price to drop....then register with the code without reinstalling.

Not sure if some of the Pro features won't work without registering first, but that's something to consider....

Since this was first posted it seems that they have done the price drop about every 8 to 12 weeks. Then it stays at the lower price for approx. a week before going up again. Just an observation, but that has been the pattern. I check it about once week and will post here if I see it drop again.

I for one appreciate it. This deal came in handy a couple of times recently, and for $40, I'll keep a spare license sitting around just in case I need one to use.

Now it's not even showing up on their site... Maybe they only have a certain allotment each month?

I would NOT keep a spare license from a deal like this, keys are often good NOW, not later as loopholes get closed.

I don't think a person has to worry about with this site. It's PC World's software store, and they're partnered directly with the software companies who have stuff for sale on the site. This isn't like buying a questionable license from Ebay or a grey-market site.

Yup, the site had a unique page just for Windows 10, but that page is now gone from the menu, as someone mentioned above. The site still has a few other Microsoft products, but not OS listings. If I notice it coming back I'll post it again. But to me it was only an attractice option at their occasional discount price of $40 for W10-PRO or $25 for w10-Home.

No thread-crap intended but I'm not sure having the name: "PC World" attached to the page makes it any more legit. (I used to be a subscriber to the paper mag way back when they were relevant) There was a time when that was true but those days have gone the way of American-made televisions.

It's just a name now like GE, Emerson or Westinghouse.

*(or Anandtech?)

Having said that, even if a key stops working for some reason it should still be possible to activate it by contacting M$ support.

Sure it's just a "name" now (just like almost every computer enthusiast site), but its who owns the name.

I have more faith that something will be legit when backed by huge corporations like Future, IDW Communications, etc. more than I do buying a license from unknown private seller on Ebay or Kinguin.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying to avoid buying a key from PC World by any means, in fact quite the opposite. I did have an 8.1 Pro key I snagged from a seller on [H] forums which later was flagged for fraud but otherwise no issues ever re-activating.

Of course I also have a $40 "Westinghouse" (lol) microwave that still works like a champ after 10+ years of heavy use including all 4 of daughter #1's college!
